Providing education in poor communities in Mukono district
Mukono       1 - 3 months

Volunteer project: The volunteer project supports a secondary school providing education and skills development to the communities of Nakaswa and the neighboring districts. Bringing educational and social service facilities closer helps in uplifting the young generation of the country and improving their wellbeing and livelihood. We are mobilizing the community to get involved in the project by creating awareness, helping in the day to day management of the school for quality education delivery, thereby improving access to education facilities. We are working together with the local governments of Mukono, Kayunga and Buikwe districts to achieve these objectives.

The aim of the project is provision of quality education in the poor communities of Mukono, Kayunga and Buikwe. We need volunteers motivated to promote education and skills development among the local communities.

The volunteers will help in the day-to-day management of the school, teaching, ICT training, and construction of the school laboratory building. They will support outreach programs and provide educational activities related to health, hygiene, sanitation, climate change and heritage conservation. The volunteers will develop community involvement activities and will prepare and support outreach programs related to the delivery of quality education to young people with emphasis on those with fewer opportunities. A garden will be set up within the school premises for demonstration purposes and in-house food production using indigenous knowledge.

Improving school infrastructure and teaching in Buikwe
Buikwe       1 - 3 months

Volunteer project: Volunteers in this project will support a Primary School in Buikwe district, east of Kampala. The main source of income and livelihood for the community around is fishing. The project was started by community members to provide education to children of fishermen. The school population is growing at a fast rate. The teacher-student ratio is 1:70. The school has no permanent structures to accommodate the growing school population which has risen from 500 to 750 pupils in the recent years. Through this project we intend to mobilize the community and improve the school infrastructure by designing and implementing fundraising programs towards this cause as we support the delivery of quality and accessible education to some of the neediest children of Uganda.

Volunteers will be involved in the day-to-day management of the school and will support their outreach programs. They will set up a garden on the school premises for demonstration purposes and in-house food production using indigenous knowledge. Volunteers will also work with students, teaching about climate change, basic health and hygiene, sanitation, and heritage conservation.

Building classrooms and sanitary facilities for a school
Kayunga       1 - 3 months

Volunteer project: The junior school in the village of Busana, Kayunga District was started by the local community to help children in the area to access quality education. The school started with 46 children in 2010. Currently, the junior school has reached an enrollment of 499 pupils. The school is sitting on a plot of land with semi permanent structures, limited space for children to play, coupled with a few latrines which occasionally are shared with the local community around. All this obstructs the delivery of quality education in the community. Through this voluntary action, we aim to improve the learning environment of the children by contributing to the structures available and generating innovative ways which are within the minimum standards required by the local authorities.

The volunteers will be engaged in mobilizing communities to get involved in the construction of permanent classrooms and sanitary facilities for the school and will help organize short-term volunteer projects. The will also participate in the day-to-day running of the school.

Teaching children and building a school in rural Uganda
Kayunga       1 - 3 months

Volunteer project: With this volunteer project, we are helping the primary school in Busaana Buyuki village, Busaana Town Council, Kayunga District. The school started in 2015 with an enrolment of 57 pupils in the first year of establishment, rising to 284 in 2018. Currently, the school has a considerable attendance of girls compared to the neighbouring schools. It has both day and boarding section to ease the distance load for those coming from far. The big challenge for the school is to get qualified teachers and facilities to accommodate them.

Currently there are semi permanent structures, all roofed, and at least lessons can be conducted indoors without hindrance from rain or sunshine. The school blocks have neither shutters nor windows to keep the learning aid materials properly and a lot of dust gets into the classrooms due to unfinished floors and walls leading to diseases and absenteeism of the children.

The volunteers will be engaged in teaching, day-to-day running of the school, mobilizing communities to get involved in the construction of sanitary facilities and permanent classrooms for the school, helping with the organization of a short-term volunteer project on site.
