eaching English in Argowilis Community Center in rural Banyumas

Volunteer project: Argowilis is a membership based organization and it is active in the following fields: education and literacy, women empowerment, micro credit, economical development and environment. The centre gives free education to 700 students (children and adults), organizes activities for street children, supports villagers through micro credit and training programmes, develops environmental projects (including reforestation) and runs social and cultural activities on a permanent basis. Since December 2006 Argowilis has been hosting both short and long term voluntary service activities. Argowilis members appreciate the presence of international volunteers and believe in the possibility to improve the centre through the exchange of good practices and ideas with the volunteers.

Aims of the project:
- To promote non-formal education and learning
- To teach foreign languages to the students
- To stimulate intercultural learning

Project activities:
- Formal and non-formal English teaching
- Entertainment activities for children and students
- Other non-formal education activities (depending on the skills and expertise of the international volunteers)

Volunteers' tasks:
- To organise and hold English and other foreign languages lessons
- To contribute to the organisation of non-formal workshops at the Argowilis Center
- To organise games and entertaining activities for children
- To contribute to the other activities organized by Argowilis

Sokawera is a small village in rural Indonesia. The closest urban area is 10 km away. The Sokawera villagers mostly work as farmers and make coconut sugar. The local families are mostly poor, so that’s why many of them can not send their kids to the formal school. Argowilis center is trying to accommodate this situation by providing free education for disadvantaged local kids.

- Motivated to spend a considerable amount of time with children
- Reliable and self responsible
- Able/willing to live in a collective setting
- Ready to adapt to simple living conditions

Language: English

Accommodation: The accommodation and food is provided by Argowilis in a local hosting family. Facilities are simple and Indonesian style.

Location: Sokawera Village, Cilongok Sub-regency, Banyumas Regency (South West of Central Java Province). It is located 250 km south-west of Semarang and about 180 km west of Yogyakarta. Sokawera village lies on the slope of the Slamet Mountain and it is surrounded by beautiful rice fields.

Age range: 18 and over

Participation fee: $590 CAD

Extra fee: 2.600.000 IDR (approximately 200ˆ) per month

English teaching program in Theresiana School in Semarang
       Semarang          May – June 2008
       Semarang          August – September 2008


Volunteer project: The volunteers will carry out English teaching activities at Theresiana Christian School which consists of kindergarten to senior high school level, all located in the same complex. The school is located close to the downtown of Semarang City. The background of the students varies from low economic to good income families. During the program, the volunteers will stay with a hosting family (one of the teacher's or student's family).

Aims of the project:
- To promote non-formal education and learning
- To teach English to the students (from kindergarten to high school level)
- To stimulate intercultural learning

Project activities:
- Formal and non-formal English teaching
- Entertainment activities for children and students
- Education

Volunteers' tasks:
- To organize and hold English and other foreign languages lessons
- To contribute to the organisation of non-formal workshops
- To organise games and entertaining activities for children
- To contribute to other activities the school may organize

Special requirements:
- Intermediate level of English
- Interest in education and cultural diversity
- Motivated to spend a considerable amount of time with children and teenagers
- Reliable and self responsible
- Able/willing to live in a collective setting
- Ready to adapt to simple living conditions

Teaching English and organizing entertainment activities for orphans in Semarang
       Semarang          May – June 2008

Volunteer project: The local partner for this project is an orphanage and kindergarten which belong to the Rodhiyah Muslim Foundation. The orphanage is home to 100 orphans.

Aims of the project:
- To promote non-formal education and learning
- To teach foreign languages to the students
- To stimulate intercultural learning
- To support the work of the orphanage and the kindergarten

Project activities:
- Formal and non-formal English teaching
- Entertainment activities for children and students
- Education

Volunteers' tasks:
- To organize and hold English and other foreign languages lessons
- To contribute to the organisation of non-formal workshops
- To organise games and entertaining activities for children
- To contribute to other activities the orphanage or the kindergarten may organize

The project will take place in urban setting. Semarang is a coastal city where business and trade are one of the major economic activities. A major port during the Dutch colonial era, and still an important port today, the city is known in Indonesia for its large population of Chinese origin. Semarang hosts also two important public universities and is home of a big number of students.

- Interest in education and cultural diversity
- Motivated to spend a considerable amount of time with children
- Reliable and self responsible
- Able/willing to live in a collective setting
- Ready to adapt to simple living conditions

Teaching English to students and teachers in a junior high school in Semarang

Volunteer project: SLTP 3 Semarang is one of the favorite junior high schools in Semarang City. The school is located in the city centre and it is easily accessible by public and private transportation.

Aims of the project:
- To promote non-formal education and learning
- To teach foreign languages to the students
- To stimulate intercultural learning

Project activities:
- Formal and non-formal English teaching
- Education

Volunteers' tasks:
- To organize and hold English lessons
- To contribute to the organisation of non-formal workshops
- To organise conversational English workshops for the teachers

The project will take place in urban setting. Semarang is a coastal city where business and trade are one of the major economic activities. Providing health care to low income communities in Central Java
       Semarang          April – June 2008

Volunteer project: Puskesmas (Public Health Center) is the lowest level public health service center provided by Indonesian government. The patients usually come from disadvantaged economic background since these centers provide low and affordable price for the local community. This project is run in cooperation with Semarang City Health Department.

Aims of the project:
- To promote and introduce the Indonesian basic health system
- To introduce foreign volunteers to the Indonesian health system
- To give a chance to medicine and nursing students or practitioners to attend internship activities
- To share knowledge and good practices with local doctors and nurses

Project activities:
- Medical assistance

Volunteers' tasks:
- To organize medical check ups for the local community, mothers and kids
- To assist local nurses in the health center

The project will take place in urban setting. Semarang is a coastal city where business and trade are one of the major economic activities. A major port during the Dutch colonial era, and still an important port today, the city is known in Indonesia for its large population of Chinese origin. Semarang hosts also two important public universities and is home of a big number of students.
