Providing care, educational and recreational
activities for disabled children in Ungaran
Ungaran
Volunteer project: Ungaran School for the Disabled was founded in 1984 to cater to the needs of disabled children and youth in Ungaran and the surrounding areas. It is mainly funded by the Central Java Government. The school's mission is to provide disabled children with a quality formal education and basic skills, that hopefully will be useful in their future. With 31 staff, the school provides care, support and education to about 100 students, mostly mentally challenged, autistic children, deaf and mute, with down syndrome or blind, the majority being between 5 and 12 years of age. Education classes start as early as kindergarten up to junior high-school. The school also provides vocational training, sports, motor activities, drawing, making handicrafts, dance, etc. Some local volunteers also join the activities in the school on a regular basis, doing plays with the kids and teaching them how to make simple handicrafts.
Volunteers are needed to assist local teachers in arranging activities for the children such as drawing, coloring, making handicrafts, dance, motor activities, etc. The volunteers will also help the teachers to supervise the children. Working with special needs children requires volunteers to be patient and creative. Volunteer's influence on students is expected to create a sense of knowledge of other realities and other cultures in the kids in a way that improves their own perception of themselves and what they can achieve. Additionally, the project is an opportunity for the international volunteers to learn about the treatment that families of these disabled children should provide.
