Teaching and taking care of orphans
Akwapim       1 - 12 months

Volunteer project: The project is organized in partnership with the staff of an orphanage home in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The home was established 13 years ago to take care of the growing number of neglected and abandoned children in the region. Today the orphanage hosts 38 children (18 boys and 20 girls). Their ages range from 8 to 16 years.

The main goal of this project is to provide assistance and help the kids have a childhood like any other child. To achieve this, more personnel per child is needed so that more time could be devoted to each child. This will also enable the staff to identify and develop children’s talents to benefit both the children and the society at large.

In the morning, the volunteers can help prepare breakfast for the children. Volunteers will be teaching at the preschool level (Alphabet, 123 numbers, English language, Math, Rhymes, Poems, Songs and Arts & Dance). After school, the volunteers can help with the children’s lunch. Then there’s time for play (football, basketball and other creative games). In the late afternoon, the volunteers will help the kids with their homework. The volunteers will also help with HIV awareness, sexual education, health and hygiene programs.
In the evenings, the volunteers are welcome to participate in cultural activities, drumming and dancing, storytelling, etc. The volunteers will help to arrange excursions for the children and are welcome to join the trips. The work activities start at 7 am and end at 2 pm.
