Volunteer opportunities in Portugal

 

Environment and natural patrimony preservation at Tamega river
      
Amarante          June 20 - July 4, 2008

Volunteer project: Aventura Marão Clube - Marão Adventure Club - is a local association in Amarante founded in 1993 with activities connected to aquatic sports (canoeing), mountain sport (BTT) and Fair Trade movement. The organization develops a lot of activities related to Environment and Natural Patrimony Preservation:
– International workcamps in 2000 (cleaning and promoting the right side of Tâmega river) and 2001 (Preserving an old water mill at Tâmega river);
– International workcamps in 2003 and 2004 (Archaeology at a religious monastery);
– S. Gonçalo Bridge and Old Tower cleaning (at Amarante's city center);
– “Clean up the world” campaigns.
Since 2000 this association hosts international volunteer projects in Amarante touching themes connected with Environment and Cultural Patrimony Preservation, Archaeology, Fair Trade and Biological Production.

The theme of this international volunteer project is Environment and Natural Patrimony Preservation at Tâmega river.

Its objectives and tasks will be to clean the left side of Tâmega river (at Sweet Chestnut trail) and conduct some natural regeneration of chestnut and some forest water species. Volunteers will be involved in awareness activities about Environment and Natural Patrimony Preservation at Tâmega river, and will help to promote the walking trail along the left side of Tâmega river and increase the use of it by sportive and local fishermen's activities.

Free time activities: During weekends volunteers will always have a leisure program (cultural, sportive, leisure) granted by the host organization (visits, leisure activities, radical sports, etc.).

D’Orfeu River World Camp
      
Agueda          July 1 - July 15, 2008

Volunteer project: D’Orfeu emerged in 1995 with the aim of promote new artistic events that could cross the traditional local culture with the various forms of art, especially music, allowing the cultural enrichment of the community. It is presented as a promoter of multidisciplinary events, which are reflected in festivals and other cultural and artistic moments throughout its existence. D'Orfeu’s activities bring together a diversity of branches that include cultural and artistic training (School of Traditional Music, Workshops), Creation (Music and Theatre) and Cultural Program (World Music Festival, Festival Gesto Orelhudo…) and initiatives of international mobility inserted in youth programme oportunities (exchanges, European Voluntary Service). In a parallel way, d'Orfeu still holds numerous partnerships with other local organizations.

D’Orfeu River World Camp aims at promoting interaction between young people and local community and its environmental and social cultural patrimony through spaces optimization/recovery, creation and maintenance of structures supporting the association’s activities, as well as community activities such as Rio Povo – platform event of multi artistic scope. During the project, volunteers will work no more than 5 hours a day.

Free time activities: In the spare time, volunteers will visit the region, with special emphasis to Águeda waterside zones, where among others, recreational activities will take place. They will also visit Aveiro and will participate in a large cultural program with different nightly amusement.

Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated at d’Ormitorium, the artistic permanent residence for foreign volunteers hosted by d’Orfeu.

Construction of a bike track and a leisure park in Leiria
      
Leiria          July 1 - July 15, 2008

Volunteer project: Main objectives of the local hosting partner are: offering participants the knowledge of Portuguese people as well as of this Portuguese region principal characteristics, mainly through visits to most important tourism centers, business-related centers and social solidarity associations.

The volunteers in the international project will be involved in tracks cleaning and clearing up, biking track construction, preparation of a leisure park and suspension bridges circuit. Volunteers will work only in the morning.

Free time activities: Afternoons and weekends will be dedicated to leisure activities and visits to historical, religious and environmental patrimony places.

Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in camping tents at Parque de Campismo do Pedrógão – Pedrógão Camping Park.

Creating a movie production and organizing the Festival of short movies in Sao Joaninho

Volunteer project: The Parish Social Centre of S. Joaninho is a social solidarity institution, created in 1999. The Centre has as its main mission the complete promotion of the whole parish, cooperating with other public services and institutions in a true spirit of human, Christian and social solidarity. In practical terms, its mission aims the satisfaction of the social needs of all inhabitants of Sao Joaninho village, although it may be extended to other villages and communities as well. They carry out a diverse amount of activities, such as: support to young people in terms of organisation and orientation of free time activities; vocational and professional orientation and practice of sports; social assistance to all of those who may need it in collaboration with health care institutions; social support to old people, through lodging, feeding, medical care and assistance in an old people's home; support to local active population, through social and cultural development programs; development of cultural, educational and recreational activities.

The theme of the international volunteer project is about preservation and valuing the historical and cultural human heritage, the assumption and the consciousness of its vital importance and contribution to the preservation of the cultural identity of the region. The work part of this project is constituted of 5 working hours per day, of training, pictures/images collecting and organisation of the Festival of short movies called “CURTES”. The methodology of collecting information and its preservation through time consists of making short movies, where the participants of the project, together with other youngsters of the village, will show their personal ideas about “The Village and its People”. The participants on this project will benefit, totally free of charge, of special training, under the format of Technical Workshops of Video and Multimedia. With these technical workshops they will get training on new technologies of information and digital methods to enable them to produce a short movie that will be exhibited on the Festival “CURTES”, under the general theme of “The Village and its People”, on July 12th and 13th.

Organizing sport events for the youth of Evora

Volunteer project: The project is organized in cooperation with Clube Volei de Évora – Évora Volleyball Club, a non profit youth association aiming mainly at sport promoting.

The main aim of the international volunteer project is: sportive events promotion for Evora young people living in the area. The volunteer team will organize sportive animation addressed to children and young people of Évora, as well as cultural exchange experiences for all the participants. Volunteers will work about 5 hours a day.

Free time activities: In their spare time, volunteers will visit the region, mainly Évora Council, will hike along existing pedestrian tracks and will participate in cultural exchanges.

Revitalizing villages at Pulo do Lobo
      
Mertola          July 8 - July 22, 2008

Volunteer project: The local partner aims to recover the natural and constructed heritage; allow the exchange of experience and knowledge between participants and local community; promote intercultural dialogue and tolerance; reinforce the self-esteem of the inhabitants, improve the quality of life, and increase the touristic attractiveness of the territory.

Volunteers' tasks will consist of up-keeping and recovery of the natural and constructed heritage of Amendoeira da Serra, Mosteira, Corte Gafo de Baixo, and Corte Gafo de Cima Villages. Some of these activities may be physically demanding. Within the work period, participants will be divided in small groups interchanging their tasks, so that they can equally participate in all of the activities. Every day except Sunday, there will be 5 hours of work and 5 hours of leisure activities and animation.

The natural waterfalls of the Guadiana River, known as Pulo do Lobo (Wolf's Leap) are within the Nature Reserve of the Guadiana river. It's a natural geologic strangling of the river Guadiana where the river, which is normally about 25 metres wide, suddenly becomes 3 metres wide, and the current becomes exceedingly strong just before it leaps over a 15 metre high rock, after which it forms a kind of lagoon.

Intercultural learning and awareness activities with the local people of Sanguedo
      
Sanguedo          July 14 - July 28, 2008

Volunteer project: This volunteer project is organized with the intent to promote intercultural dialogue and create spaces to promote intercultural learning; to raise awareness and mutual respect for diversity, and allow the knowledge of other cultures and regions.
During the project, the volunteers will work between five to six hours a day.
The organization has planned some workshops in order to prepare and improve the performance of young people in the fieldwork and give opportunity for interaction with the local people and with the environment.

Free time activities: For the leisure time, some visits and activities are scheduled to know more about Sanguedo and city neighbours.

Accommodation: The accommodation will be in the headquarters of the hosting Association, in rooms equipped with 8/10 single beds, access to bathrooms, locker rooms, kitchen and gym.

Archeological research project in Freixo de Numao

Volunteer project: Associação Cultural Desportiva e Recreativa de Freixo de Numão – Freixo de Numão Cultural Sportive and Recreational Association is a youth association which main objectives are protecting and promoting the regional cultural patrimony.
The objective of this program is to give continuity to an archeological research project and the desire to turn the archeological place into a museum that has been developed since 1980 with the permanent support of this association and the Portuguese Youth Institute.

Tasks to be carried out by the volunteer group:
- Maintenance and restoration aiming at turning the archeological place into a museum;
- Methodological digging, with an archaeologist's help;
- Soil riddling and floating, aiming at collecting different elements (coals, seeds, bones, etc.) for analysis;
- Materials washing and labeling.
During the project volunteers will work about 6 hours a day.

Free time activities: In the spare time, volunteers will visit belvederes, castles, historical villages (Marialva), Vale do Côa engraving and Douro Wine Region (UNESCO Patrimonies). There will also be a visit to Museum Monografico Coninbriga.

Organizing and participation in artistic workshops on drama, environment, dancing and music

The volunteer project is about community and social intervention and its objectives are: to develop artistic workshops for a two week period of time, lasting 5 hours a day, involving different age groups: children from 6 to 10 and youngsters from 12 to 17, but also adults over 65. The aim is to promote intergenerational contacts among different age groups. The participants in the project will have double role on it: on one hand they will be the promoters and mediators of the non-formal educational process and simultaneously the direct participants both on planning and evaluating of the artistic workshops, contributing with their own personal experiences and social and cultural realities, through the promotion of effective moments of reflexion and intercultural dialogue. The project also includes four artistic workshops: Drama, Environmental Education, Dancing and Musical Expression “The sounds of the world”. The workshops on Dancing and Musical Expression will take place at the same time.

Promoting sports and healthy lifestyle in rural areas

Volunteer project: S. Joaninho Recreation Club is a non-profit association founded in 1993. Cultural and sportive growing progress leaded to the need of creating and developing projects in musical, theatre and folklore areas, which have profound roots in the village. Nevertheless, the Association extended its intervention to themes such as Diversity and Equality of Opportunities, European Conscientiousness, Intercultural Learning and Professional Training. The Association promotes several initiatives of community intervention and leisure time, occupation targeting children and young people in social exclusion but also their families and the whole community.

The project is about social and community intervention, sports and health, intergenerational contacts and equal opportunities. The project aims to contribute to the consciousness of the importance of practicing sports to the promotion of a healthy lifestyle; to promote intergenerational contacts within the context of sports practice as a way of connecting people, sharing and reinforcement of social bounds. This project intends to benefit everyone involved, both directly and indirectly, with two weeks in Movement, by giving to the entire community a show of different sports, happening simultaneously in different grounds of the Municipality of Santa Comba Dão. Different sports, from the most radical ones, like Slide, Rappel, TT, to the most traditional ones like traditional community games, promoting this way the intergenerational contacts and the richness of this knowledge and life experiences.
During the project, volunteers will work about 5 hours a day.

Dream of Jazz

Volunteer project: The project "Dream of Jazz" is connected to the International Loulé Jazz Festival. The international volunteers are invited to help in the promotion of the Festival. Besides the tasks of promotion/publicity, in the days of the shows, the volunteer team will be in charge of part of the logistic of the Festival and assisting the shows.
In this project, the intention is to let the participants know more about the reality of the youth associations movement, especially the cultural promoters in the area, such as the local Casa da Cultura. The volunteers will work 5 hours a day.

Free time activities: In their free time, the volunteers will visit the region and learn a bit about its history; meanwhile, they will have the chance to try Kayak, Paintball, beach, walks, etc...

Volunteer project: The general objective of this project is to foster intercultural dialogue as a process that enables a more opened and complex cultural environment to function.

Conference, seminars and debates on the contexts of multiculturalism.
Workshop of inquiry and publications (edition of a Bulletin and a page in the Internet) on the topic of multiculturalism in Portugal and Europe.
Workshops and training courses which focus on the needs of children and young people.
Festivals and reviews presenting and introducing the faces of multiculturality.

Improving the sport facilities in Vilar Formoso

Volunteer project: Associação Desportiva, Cultural e Social de Aldeia de S. Sebastião is based in a small village, with 80 inhabitants and near the border between Portugal and Spain, this association brings together several different projects within the youth program, such as national and international youth exchanges, summer camps and international workcamps.
They organize events at a social, cultural and sportive level, always regarding themes as environment protection, community social work, cultural diversity and sports as a non formal education tool. They count already with over 1500 associates.
Infra-structures: Association headquarter, green camping, amphitheater, multisport field, swimming pool and playground.
Equipments: Audiovisuals; Canoes, bikes, special equipment for outdoor sports among others;

Our aim is to improve the sports facilities by creating a new area which will allow us to organize other kind of outdoor activities like mini-golf and athletics and some extreme sports such as sliding, escalade, rappel and skating.

Volunteer project: Clube Volei de Évora – Évora Volleyball Club is a non profit youth association aiming mainly at sport promoting. Organization main aims for this workcamp are: sportive events liveliness and promotion for youg people living in rural areas near Évora. The activities will be done in the green areas of the rural areas.
We will do sportive animation addressed to children and young people that are in rural areas. We will promote as well experiences exchanging between participants.
During the camp volunteers will work no longer than 5h/day.

Avanca International Meeting of Cinema, TV, Video and Multimedia

Volunteer project: With more than two decades of existence, Cine-Club of Avanca produces, distributes and exhibits cinema works and audiovisuals beyond organizing, since 1997, the “International Meeting of Cinema, Television, Video and Multimedia”.
Volunteers in this work camp are involved in various levels of the organization, providing a determinant support for the success of this International Meeting.
Being AVANCA an idea sharing favored space, creative fusion and cultural interchange between, professionals, students and cinema and multimedia lovers, the volunteers will naturally participate and dive in this international, culture and creative atmosphere.

In the working periods, volunteers will do the following tasks:
During preparation and setting phase
• Sinalethic setting for the different spaces in AVANCA’08;
• Poster and pending poster distribution;
• Exposition setting and Organization;
• Adaptation of the EB23 Egas Moniz school classrooms for workshops attainment;
• Workshop related Video-Informatics equipment instalation and testing;
• Cleaning and preparation of the Auditorium of Avanca for competitive sessions of Cinema and Video;
• Organization of the EB23 Egas Moniz School’s polyvalent for the Television competitive sessions;
• Airport reception and welcoming of the AVANCA’08 international guests – directors, actors, producers, technicians, etc...
• Cleaning and maintenance of spaces and sanitary installations used by the volunteers;

During the International Meeting:
• Check-in support for the AVANCA’08 participants and guests;
• Organization of the available camping for the workshop participants;
• Gestation and maintenance of the Workshop rooms;
• Cantina support;
• AVANCA’08 sale posts support (Which will have several articles related with the festival);
• AVANCA’08 Secretariat support;
• AVANCA’08 Press Cabinet Support;
• Film Projection support during competitive sessions;

Free time activities: To moments dedicated to cultural animation and discovering of surroundings, Cine-Clube de Avanca offers a set of activities, which will give an insight of the social realities, cultural and gastronomical, between others, from the village of Avanca and the region that extends betweens the cities of Aveiro and Porto.
• Visits to the cultural and natural patrimonies of Avanca and outskirts among the which detach, the museum household, Egas Moniz and the ecologic pedestrian circuit BioRIA;
• Visits to the city of Aveiro;
• Visit to the city of Porto during which volunteers will have “in-loco” acquaintance of the Portugal history. As usual, some volunteers already know the historical area. To these participants, we suggest a visit to Serralves Foundation. During this visit, they will discover a modern feature of the city. To end the visit, the group visits Porto Wine Cellars.
• Going to the beach is another high moment for volunteers, once we are acknowledging that the proximity to the Atlantic is a determinant factor for volunteers’ choices. These visits will be conditioned by climatic conditions and depending on the work that must be done.
• During Avanca’08, work is organized in a way that allows half of the group to have a free day. During the day, tasks will be also performed in a way that will allow to volunteers to participate in workshops and see competitive sessions.
• Meals are always privileged moments for social gathering with all the volunteers. These moments are also “enriched” with the presence of other guests and participants of the festival.
• Saturday, we’ll organize a multicultural dinner, with traditional dishes made by volunteers. The dinner will be improved with stories, songs and other ways of expression that can demonstrate each volunteer culture.
• In free evenings, volunteers have the opportunity to go to places where young locals frequently go and meet new people and a new reality.

Recovery of traditional pigeon houses
      
Vilar Seco          July 20 - August 3, 2008

Volunteer project: Activities Dinamization of environmental education with young people; maintenance of pigeon houses; Training in areas of ecoconstrution; Participation in cultural events; Organization of the International fields of work. Development actions for the conservation of birds of prey.

In the neighborhoods of the Natural Park of the International Douro, the village of Vilar Seco, with a sufficiently expressive number of pigeons houses for its number, forms, antiquity and is value - architectural. This allied situation to the fantastic agricultural and historical patrimony of this village, and the relative proximity of the Zone of Special Protection of the International Douro and the Valley of the Maces and the Flavor and to the side of the Small farm of the National List International Douro (Net Nature 2000), place where ii will select one of the pigeon houses for its recovery, and the proximity to the local of nest building of birds of prey, that makes of this area an excellent potential in has of choice for uncurling of this field of work.
The main objective is the recovery and the revitalization of two Traditional Pigeon houses. Its recovery, wants either for the architectonic, cultural and landscapist valuation, as a contribute for the cultural and in a perspective of nature tourism and its revitalization (with Pigeon-das-rocks) as a contribute for the preservation of avifauna local and in particular of one of the birds of prey more threatened at the national level - the Eagle of Bonelli (Hieraaetus fasciatus), having in account that the Pigeon-das-rocks is currently one of the supplemental and main alimentation of the diet of this eagle. One intends equally that this activity is a true campaign of environment education, mobilizing the young volunteers and the local people, through some educative sessions (sessions with projection multimedia) and passages pedestrians, for the preservation of the patrimony and conservation of the nature of this region. Finally, to try to develop the village where the field of work through the interchange established between the young participants and the local population elapses.

Tasks: to carry through for the young (to annex the program of the daily activities and respective daily table):
The work field will count on the participation of 18 volunteers, with superior age the 18 years, that will form 2 teams of 9 elements for pigeon house to recover.
Each teams will have the accompaniment of a worker of civil construction destined to teach the techniques of the civil construction and to assist the weighed tasks most delicate or, such as the construction of the structure of the roof and the tow of the walls of the pigeon house, and will be followed (commanded and supported) by a monitor of the Palombar. All the group of the work field will have a monitor of the responsible Palombar for the logistic necessities of all the activities.
The works of recovery of the pigeon houses are conducted for the following shares, for the following chronological order:
- cleanness of weeds and garbage in the surrounded area of the pigeon houses - with the aid of hoes and shovels, it will be proceeded all cleanness from the weeds (shrubs, etc…) e of the garbage that if can find to the return of the pigeon houses;
- cleanness of the interior - simultaneously and in the same way, the interior of the pigeon houses will be cleaned (removed of all the accumulated rubbish and possible shrubs that can have grown in the interior);
- withdrawal of the old one I tow - case is necessary will have to be removed with the aid of hammers and tips the old one. Tow of the walls of the pigeon houses and later to clean around of the pigeon house all the fallen rubbish (proceeding from the old one tow);
- arrangement of the roof - in case that it is necessary, the roof must be remade, where a new structure of support in wood is placed and the roofing tiles (that they will have been clean, for the fact of if respecting the traditional architectonic characteristics of the pigeon houses)
- rank of new tow - the worker of the civil construction will tow the walls of the pigeon house and the volunteers will have simply that to make and to pass the cement to the people charged of this work. In case that the volunteer already has some used time this technique and if he feels with adjusted capacities to proceed with tow, it can do it, as he is natural, make it;
- whitewashing of the walls - after the drying tow of it of the walls, will proceed it its whitewashing with the aid from small brooms, with alive whitewash, that will have been prepared previously (at least 24 hours before);
- rank and painting of the door;
- restocking of the pigeon houses with some couples of deriving Pigeon-das-rocks of the region.

Excavations at Chã da Bica archaeological site

Volunteer project: “Escora” – Associação de Jovens para a Preservação Cultural e Arqueológica de Montalvo (Escora – Youth Association for Cultural and Archaeological Preservation of Montalvo) is a youth association which main activity is archaeology. Furthermore Chã da Bica digging, it has already two books published: “Patrimony Copy-Book” turning on the work developed between 1999/2001 in Chã da Bica archaeological station and “Archaeological Chart of Constância Council” where the different archaeological stations of the council are identified. In an annual basis, the association also carries out actions aiming at sensitizing the local population as well as the general population for the preservation of the council environmental and constructed patrimony.
This work aims at continuing the digging started in 1999 in Chã da Bica archaeological station. Discoveries allow us to say that we are in the presence of a tardo roman thermal building of middle of III/IV century a.C. Archaeological intervention will be done in a daily basis between 07:30 am and 12:30 pm, except Saturday and Sunday. Field work will essentially consist of digging, gathering and registration of cultural materials, temporary storage of findings, design, topography and topographical survey. Every work will be closely followed by the archaeologist Salete da Ponte, teaching at Instituto Politécnico de Tomar - Tomar Polytechnic Institute and by a Preservation and Restore technician.

Free time activities: In the afternoons several leisure activities will take place such as pedestrian journeys, canoeing, visits to Tomar town, Alcobaça Monastery, Nazaré beach and Constância Living Science Centre with a session of astronomy, among other activities.

Vale do Mouro archeological project

Volunteer project: Centro Sócio Cultural da Coriscada – Coriscada Social Cultural Centre is an association with headquarters at Coriscada parish, Meda Municipality in Guarda District. Coriscada is a village placed 3 km away from Marialva Town which main objectives are: social, cultural and sportive solidarity, leisure activities, urban patrimony preservation, archeology and young people support.
Project's main objectives are: invigorating Vale do Mouro archeological project, divulging this patrimony, the local culture and the council.
Volunteers will be devided in working groups guided by the youth leader and Dr. António Sá Coixão – park responsible archeologist. They will have the following tasks: excavation, maintenance and restoration, materials washing and labeling, among others.

Volunteer project: The Social Promotion Centre is an institution of local development with several activities such as home support to old people, Education and Training of unemployed and active youth and adults, biological agriculture project and regional traditional cookery project and also promotes several social and communitarian intervention projects and supports traditional and multi cultural events, holiday camps and exchanges.

The project’s theme is connected to the preparation and organization of an international world dance festival.
Participants will have the opportunity to know the region’s natural and cultural patrimony. The program will include entertainment and inter cultural exchange of activities as well as dance workshops.

Volunteer project: Health Adventure Association is a youth association that aims at promoting man-environment binomial. Within the whole of accomplished activities, pedestrian courses, mycological activities (mushrooms), national and international workcamps, environmental activities in protected areas, can be mentioned.
The camp’s theme is related to environment and consists of carring out cleaning tasks in Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês – National Park of Peneda-Gerês, Park’s nursery up-keeping, works for Associação Pedras Brancas – Association White Rocks (involving linen cycle), works in the newer Garrano centre, fluvial beach cleaning.

Nature Conservation in the National Park of Peneda Gerês

Volunteer project: The main objective of this project is to allow young people the opportunity to contribute to nature conservation in Portugal´s only national park, by carrying out activities that follow the principles of nature conservation and sustainability in line with local traditions and by involving the residents of the local rural community. In the morning, participants will be involved in volunteer work. In the afternoon and at night they will be involved in leisure activities, sport, intercultural communication with the local community and visits to the region. The volunteers’ tasks will consist of defining, cleaning and interpret walking trails and possibly identify other opportunities for activities in the natural environment.

Preserving traditional cooking practices and preparing a Gastronomy Fair

Volunteer project: The Parish Social Centre of S. Joaninho is a social solidarity institution, created in 1999. The Centre has as its main mission the complete promotion of the whole parish, cooperating with other public services and institutions in a true spirit of human, Christian and social solidarity. In practical terms, its mission aims the satisfaction of the social needs of all inhabitants of Sao Joaninho village, although it may be extended to other villages and communities as well. They carry out a diverse amount of activities, such as: support to young people in terms of organisation and orientation of free time activities; vocational and professional orientation and practice of sports; social assistance to all of those who may need it in collaboration with health care institutions; social support to old people, through lodging, feeding, medical care and assistance in an old people's home; support to local active population, through social and cultural development programs; development of cultural, educational and recreational activities.

The project subject is about social and communitarian intervention and Intercultural Dialogue, preservation of the historical, cultural and gastronomic human heritage and regional identities. This project intends to preserve the history and the ancient recipes and put them in real practice, exhibiting the products in a Gastronomy Fair, basically of desserts. Interviews and practical workshops have as main objectives to collect testimonies and life stories about traditional cooking practices, enhancing the “Hows”, the whys” and the “what for”, promoting real intercultural dialogues at the dinning table, around the most delicious desserts of ancient times, from today and perhaps from the future…All the recipes will be preserved on a DVD and the special flavours can be tasted in the Gastronomic Fair.

Reviving the traditional St. Lawrence Party

Volunteer project:  S. Joaninho Recreative Club is a non profit private Association with the connotation of being na Entity of Public Utility since 1993. The Club has 35 years of age and is a quality reference with intervention at Local and Regional level. Cultural and sportive growing progress, leaded to the need of creating and developing projects in musical, theatre and folklore areas, which have profound roots in the village. Nevertheless, the Association extended its intervention to themes such as Diversity and Equality of Opportunities, European Conscientiousness, Intercultural Learning and Professional Training. The Association promotes several initiatives of communitarian intervention and leisure times, occupation targeting children and young people in social exclusion but also their families and the whole community.

The subject is about social and communitarian intervention, preservation of historical and cultural heritage, intercultural dialogue and regional identities. The camp aims to promote mobility and youth exchange of Portuguese and European youngsters; to contribute to the preservation of the cultural identity of a specific region and to develop bounds of union and sharing among the members of a community. This Camp intends to preserve a tradition – St. Lawrence Party. In 2007, for several reason the celebrations of St. Lawrence day didn’t take place. The Youth Association intends, in 2008, to bring back the tradition and with it bring together a whole village. The work consists of setting up small tents on wood where traditional food and drinks will be sold during the celebrations, but the volunteers will take part in party animation.

Environmental work at the banks of Maçãs river

Volunteer project:  Bragança District Natural Park of Montesinho, Village of Quintanilha, Aldeia de Quintanilha, Maçãs river (border river to Spain). The theme of the project is related to the environment and the natural environment in general the purpose is to supply to a greater approximation of the various communities and to drawing up for Community.
The specific objectives of the healthy field proceed to the cleaning up of the edges of the Maças river, maintenance of mills, tourist environmental walks, a warm welcoming with the local community, cleaning of left garbage.

Volunteer project: Association Action for Justice and Peace aims “Constructing Peace, Democracy, Justice and Equal Opportunities for Women and Men” involving young people, women, local communities and other disfavored population as especially acting forces, namely trough: a) Production and Spread of Knowledge; b) Lifelong Education and Professional Training; c) Communitarian Intervention for Development; d) Education for Development and Projects of Understanding Cooperation; e) National and International Public Intervention.
In what concerns specific objectives of the volunteer project, these combine in the promotion of a global, active and understanding volunteering. Thus the specific objectives are: Promoting co-responsible volunteering and youth understanding; Promoting a work camp to educate and train youngsters for local intervention; Persuading youngsters to be multipliers of social and understanding economies practices; Placing the camp at the disposal of Granja do Ulmeiro community; Promoting intercultural learning.

Organising creative and leisure activities for children and teenagers
      
Apelação           August 4 - August 15, 2008

Volunteer project: The workcamp will be in the Cultural Centre of Bairro da Quinta da Fonte, Apelação, in which the children and teenagers from the nearby neighbourhood spend their free time. More or less 15,6% of the neighbourhood residents are foreigners, particularly from the Portuguese-speaking African countries
During two weeks, the volunteers will participate in the implementation of certain activities that were previously planned and organized, for the children and teenagers that live in Bairro da Quinta da Fonte, Apelação. Additionally, the volunteers are expected to organise, as a team, leisure activities with the children and teenagers who use to go to the Centre.
In what concerns specific objectives of the workcamp, they are defined within the framework of European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008. Thus the specific objectives of the workcamp are: i) development of socio-cultural activities with the children and teenagers who live in the neighbourhood; ii) promoting their involvement in the activities planning process; iii) Promoting intercultural learning and a better understanding of different realities.

The volunteers will have to do most of the time with creative activities but also with games that will involve all the team and the neighbourhood young residents. No particular abilities are required; we only need motivated and creative people to work in group and to be open to other cultures.

Free time activities: During the workcamp, we will have the chance to visit the Refugee Centre, supported by the Portuguese Refugee Council, in which refugees are expecting their authorisation in order to get residential permission in Portugal.

Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted in the school of Apelação (15 minutes on foot from the Cultural Centre, where they will work). Tents will be provided by the school. Usually it’s quite warm during the day (more than 30 C), but in August there might be some very hot days.

On the route of fossils

Volunteer project: The “Amigos do Geoparque” are a small young group who contribute to the preservation and divulgation of the historic and cultural patrimony of Penha Garcia region in particular and all Geopark (which belongs to UNESCO European and Global Geoparks) in general. This ancient village, built with schist houses, has a templary castle from which we can admire an unforgettable view of the Beira Baixa plane and Penha Garcia dam. Their mountain cliffs are a paleontologist, geologist and nature lovers oasis, because easily we find marine fossils.
The work plan includes the turistic guide to icnofossils, paleozoic museum maintenance, and paleontologist patrimony cleanning.

Free time activities: We also have planned some visits to Monsanto and Idanha-a-Velha historical villages, “Parque Natural do Tejo Internacional” and “Gardunha” mountain. You will be able to practice some radical sports, to cook traditional bread, enjoy music and local gastronomy, etc. The participants can also swim in the Penha Garcia natural swimming pool, refreshing in the summer torrid days (temperature usually reach 35ºC).

Accommodation: Accomodation will be provided in a particular house placed in a Penha Garcia farm.

Pechão Traditional Parties

Volunteer project:  This association has been organizing through out the years a series of activities, namely: Exchanges; National and International Work Camps; Holiday Centers and Camps; Sportive Holidays; Holidays in Movement; PAAJ since 1996; among other permanent activities, such as: Group of Dances and Folklore, Sport Schools, etc.
The camp theme is related to Pechão Traditional Parties. There are different activities: cleaning, painting and signaling of the surrounding area as well as “small bridges” near the sport zone cleaning and painting. These activities will certainly give to young people a new contact with a different culture inserting them in an intercultural learning mind.
