Dinosaurs in Lourinha
      
Lourinhã, Lisbon          July 1 - July 15, 2010

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project aims to provide the volunteers with a unique experience in one of the most prestigious museums in the country in terms of Paleontology. The project also aims to promote the exchange of personal and cultural experiences, and give chance to the participants to meet other socio-cultural realities that the City of Lourinhã offers, as well as to visit different cultural places.

The volunteer group will be working on an excavation project with one of the most respected groups of paleontologists in the country. The activities will allow the contact with paleontological findings of millions of years and will give chance to the participants to get to know the main areas of work and exhibition of the Museum of Lourinhã. The group will also get to know the work of the only lab existent in the country that prepares paleontological fossils on a full-time basis. The volunteers will work in the lab, on the excavations, in the museologic reserves and in the main hall of paleontology. The tasks to be undertaken by the participants will include inventory and storage of the museologic reserves, cleaning and preparation of fossils, monitoring of the exhibitions during the visiting periods, promoting the Museum; contacts with several organisations of Lourinhã, in order to disseminate information about the history and culture among the most disadvantaged people.

Social inclusion and interaction program in the district of Braga
      
S. José de S. Lázaro, Braga          July 1 - July 15, 2010

Volunteer project: The Cultural and Social Center of Santo Adrião, located in the North of Portugal, has the mission to give social support to the community and associates, in all stages of their lives, with relevance for children, youth, and seniors.
Over its 26 years, it has been devoted to social causes, present in all its projects, ranging from Nursery School, Kindergarten, Activities and Leisure Center, Support for Children at Risk, Temporary Shelter for Children at Risk, Day Center, Home Care, Elderly Home, Social Inclusion Enterprise, Office of Income Social Inclusion and, more recently, the Office of Emergency Social Support.

The objectives of this volunteer project are to organize activities that promote inclusion and interaction, through involvement with the community of the city of Braga; create mechanisms and structures that promote environmental education and the respect for nature, enhancing the youngsters' psycho-social welfare; conduct discussions and workshops about social exclusion problematic with the aim of making a document with inclusion policies; using materials and environmental trends for development of activities with disadvantaged populations.
The volunteers will take part in workshops and various activities about issues of social exclusion, create materials for animation, and organize animation activities for different target groups (children, youngsters and elderly) in institutions in the district of Braga.

Saving the great birds of the canyons
  Algodres, Guarda          July 1 - July 13, 2010

Volunteer project: The project is organized in cooperation with an environment NGO, created in 2000 at Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Guarda district, Portugal. Their mission is the conservation of the Riba-Côa natural heritage. To achieve this goal, the objectives are the study and conservation of flora and fauna of the Côa, Águeda and Douro watersheds, environmental education, development of sustainable rural development projects, and the recovery and promotion of the cultural and architectural heritage of the region. Their main project, the Faia Brava Reserve, at the Côa Valley SPA, is a 600 ha property, managed exclusively for nature and culture heritage conservation.

The goal of this volunteer project is to support the conservation of the great cliff-breeder birds, threatened species in the European context, with important breeding populations at the Faia Brava Reserve - Vale do Côa, through practical actions for the conservation of important habitats and prey species populations. The participants will receive theoretical and practical information from specialists on bird identification and conservation methods, and will develop practical work on ecological restoration and species monitoring.
Main tasks include:
1. Vulture feeder observatory construction;
2. Cliff-breeders observatory construction;
3. Construction of a network of Red-partridge feeders;
4. Traditional pigeon house recovery;
5. Bird ID practice and bird surveys.

Free time activities: On evenings and days off, the participants will have the opportunity to discover the region, through guided visits to rock art sites at the Côa Valley Archaeological Park, visit to the Douro International Natural Park and the Arribes del Duero Natural Park (Spain), bird watching activities, traditional music and rural activity evenings, with the support of the local population.

Accommodation: Basic camping site at the Faia Brava Reserve. The camping site is fully equipped with kitchen, green dry bathrooms, showers and large tents. The nearest village (15 minutes away by car) has a small supermarket and a café. Transport to the nearest town for groceries, pharmacy, etc. will be provided.

Location: The Algodres village is located 14 km from Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo (Guarda). The fieldwork will be done at the Faia Brava Reserve, 4 km away from the village.

Archeological research project in Freixo de Numao
      
Freixo de Numao, Guarda          July 12 - July 26, 2010

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project aims to support the efforts for protecting and promoting the regional cultural patrimony of Freixo de Numão. The objective of this program is to give continuity to an archeological research project and the desire to turn the archeological place into a museum that has been developed since 1980 with the permanent support of the Portuguese Institute for Youth.

Tasks to be carried out by the international volunteer group:
- Maintenance and restoration aiming at turning the archeological place into a museum;
- Methodological digging, with an archaeologist's help;
- Soil riddling and floating, aiming at collecting different elements (coals, seeds, bones, etc.) for analysis;
- Materials washing and labeling.

Language: English

Free time activities: In the spare time, volunteers will visit belvederes, Museum, castles, historical villages (Marialva), Vale do Côa engraving and Douro Wine Region (UNESCO Patrimonies).

Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in a Youth Centre, composed of 2 dormitories and 8 rooms.

Location: Freixo de Numão, 200 km from Porto, 400 km from Lisboa, 90 km from Guarda, 12 km from Foz Côa.

Rebuilding Inclusion
      
Granja do Ulmeiro, Coimbra          August 2 - August 16, 2010

Volunteer project: Action for Justice and Peace is an association that has as objective to build a culture of peace, based on the rights of all persons, on inclusive and participative democracy, on social and cognitive justice and in an environment that is able to give and preserve life. Their mission is to promote dialogues on feminism, peace and demilitarization, to strengthen actions against poverty and violence, to develop counter-hegemonic bonds between the local and the global. The association works in the following areas: Equality of Opportunities and Parity; Human Rights Training and Education; Community Development and Solidarity Alternatives; Voluntary Work; Participation in Networks and Platforms; Production of alternative knowledge.

The volunteers will take part in various activities:
- Renovation of the Primary School: building and surrounding area.
- Community project "Solidarity Market": participation in the Solidarity Market (design of products / services).
- Cultural moments: Realization of an intercultural meeting, following the underlying theme of poverty and social exclusion.
- Workshops: These are proposed to strengthen and promote group cohesion, providing greater interaction and cooperation between all the participants, but also sharing of knowledge and expertise.

Free time activities: Time will be taken to visit the region, namely the city of Coimbra and the beach of Figueira-da-Foz, as well as the city of Oporto.

Accommodation: In shared rooms, equipped with mattresses. Participants will have to bring their sleeping bags.

Location: The project will take place in the village Granja do Ulmeiro which belongs to Soure, District of Coimbra.

Four corners of the World
      
Constância, Santarém          August 18 - September 1, 2010

Volunteer project: The volunteer project takes place in Constância, a beautiful town in the countryside of Central Portugal. "Four Corners of the World" is a project based on the International year for combating Poverty and Social Exclusion.

The tasks for the international volunteers will be:
1 – Developing leisure activities and animation workshops
2 – Preparing and performing animation activities during the Rural Festival 2010
3 – Performing an Intercultural night open for the local community (presenting your country)
Four Corners of the World is a Green Camp, meaning that the emission of CO2 will be limited.

Free time activities: During the project, the volunteer group will take part in different visits of cultural places in Santarem's Region. The planned visits and leisure activities include: Environmental Park and Sciences Live Centre (Astrology); Biggest farm in Portugal which is growing watercress by organic way of production; Cultural Heritage in the region (castle and special natural reserves); Workshop of Portuguese Folk dances; Outdoor Sports with local community; Traditional games (by all participants); Workshop on Regional Handicraft; Contact with rural tradition and local community visiting some of the local organizations (cultural, sports, etc); Annual Festival in Pereira.

Accommodation: Accommodation will be in a building provided with all facilities, with multiple rooms for the volunteers. During the Annual festival, the volunteers will have the opportunity to camp on the festival grounds.

Location: Constância is in Santarem's district, in the countryside of Portugal, 120 km from Lisbon, 250 km from Porto, 70 km from Santarem, 170 km from Coimbra, 350 km from Faro. Nearby, there is also some urban civilization around where you can visit some historical places and have a contact with urban lifestyle easily: Entroncamento – 15 km; Torres Novas – 20 km; Abrantes – 15 km.

Creating recycled metal sculptures for the community of Sintra
      
Sintra, Lisboa          August 31 - September 14, 2010

Volunteer project: The volunteer project aims to promote the exchange of personal and cultural experiences among international participants and local people. The volunteers will learn techniques from the metal workshop (cutting, welding, ergot, painting, metal treatment, etc.) and will work on public places where people gather. The group will create a construction out of metal objects fallen into disuse, such as: industrial waste and car parts, etc.

The main tasks to be undertaken by the group will be designing and creating two large sculptures, 6 feet height, using recycled metals. The two sculptures will create a dialogue between themselves, forming a unit. It is intended that the focus is on issues of civilization and human evolution, highlighting some of the stages of growth, such as: primitive, sedentary, urban, commercial, industrial, of communication, tertiary and services. The volunteers will work on the preparation of the place for setting up the studio with the equipment, collecting materials for the workshop and preparation of materials, construction of structures and foundations, and construction of the sculptures.

Intercultural Bridges
      
Granja do Ulmeiro, Coimbra          September 1 - September 15, 2010

- Recovery of Public Space - construction of a rail and restoration of a wooden bridge.
- Community Project - on completion of the construction/restoration of the rail and the bridge, we'll set a time when everyone in the community can come and see the new space and meet the authors of the work.
- Workshops - The aim is to strengthen and promote group cohesion, providing greater interaction and cooperation between all the participants, but also sharing of knowledge and expertise.

Graffiti Walls
      
Olhão, Faro          September 6 - September 14, 2010

Volunteer project: The local host is a youth organization, which aim is to stimulate active participation of young people in society, to develop activities in intercultural, educational, social, sports, recreational and environmental character, with a view to the self-development of young people in the region.

The international volunteer project will be dedicated to the Graffiti culture.The aim of the project is to create awareness about the difference between Graffiti Art and Tags. So the main task is to identify the tags and clean them. This will involve painting the walls and taking out the tags. The main activities are identifying the tags in the city, the walls that need to be restored and cleaning them, in order to give more visibility to the artistic graffitis.
The international participants will be in contact with yougnsters from socially disadvantaged neighbourhoods, so the social aspect of this project is also very important to promote intercultural dialogue and create changes in their behavior.

Free time activities: The volunteers will have group dynamics activities for team building (such as treasure hunt, cultural activities) and some visits to the islands and to different cities.

Accommodation: Participants will sleep in the gym of a school with bunk beds and Internet access provided.

Location: Olhão is a fisherman city near the capital of Algarve in the South of Portugal. The airport is at a 20 km distance. Nowadays it is one of the most popular cities for Graffiti culture.

Preserving the natural and cultural patrimony of Lousa
      
Lousã, Coimbra          September 13 - September 27, 2010

Volunteer project: Lousã is a beautiful town (15 000 habitants) in the centre of the Serra da Lousa mountains. Not long ago, it was countryside, but because of the development of the region, especially Coimbra City, Lousa is growing up and now it’s a place with a lot of modern attractions existing close to tradition and beautiful nature.

In the area of Lousã, the team of international volunteers will help to restore the cultural heritage (mills and a chapel); create accessible path; building a picnic area with wood and accessible for different people; building small wooden bridges over the river; cleaning the path and putting some signs; promote intercultural exchange; encourage voluntarism in the community and promote Lousã and the region. The volunteers will be cleaning the path and building tables and wooden bridges with the support of a technical leader. They will also organize cultural activities with the community.

Free time activities: The program includes a folklore workshop, a visit to Coimbra (university city), to an old village in the mountain and going to the beach.

Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in a youth hostel in Lousã.

Art on the pavement
      
Sintra, Lisboa          September 16 - September 30, 2010

Volunteer project: The volunteer project aims to promote the exchange of personal and cultural experiences among international participants and local people. The volunteers will learn pavement construction techniques and develop a common artistic action related to the local culture and environment, promoting the natural potential of the region, traditions and heritage. The idea is to develop and enrich local open spaces through arts. Volunteers are invited to bring out their artistic side.

The main tasks to be undertaken by the group will be preparation of the place to build the pavement, preparing the materials (stone); learning the techniques of placing the pavement; participation in the group activities such as travel, animations, etc.

Promote Fair Trade and organic farming in Amarante
      
Amarante, Porto          September 16 - September 30, 2010

Volunteer project: This volunteer project in Amarante is intended to raise awareness among the international participants and the local population on organic farms, organic food and fair trade; to develop skills related to agriculture work in organic farms and environment preservation; to run activities in order to increase the level of commitment for organic and fair trade products at local level (Amarante).

The volunteers in the project will be involved in the following activities: group dynamics; presentation to the city and the region; discussions on the project theme (objectives, tasks division); visit to the most important places of the city; training about fair trade and sustainable development (e.g. workshop about Fair Trade and healthy food); direct contact and work with local organic producers; organizing an open air event (fair) in the city center about organic and fair trade products.

Free time activities: Visits to some of the main cities and spots in the North of Portugal (Guimarães, Porto, Parque Natural do Alvão).

Accommodation: Participants will be accommodated in shared rooms (4 participants each) of Casa da Juventude de Amarante (participants should bring a sleeping bag). Healthy food with organic and vegetarian ingredients will be provided. Laundry available (self-service). The youth centre has free wireless.

Location: Amarante is a small town in the North of Portugal, part of Porto district (60 km far from Porto, to the interior) with 12.000 inhabitants. It is a quite famous city for tourism, culture and wine production. Indeed it is quite near (18 km) to the Oporto wine region. It is crossed by Tâmega River (one of the rivers ending at Douro River that crosses Porto till the Atlantic ocean) and is in the valley of one of the most important Portuguese mountains, Marão (1450 m). Amarante is well located (nearby passes highway A4 connecting to Oporto and highway A11 connecting to Guimarães) and has a good public transport system (bus station). The city is 40 min away from the nearest airport (Oporto) by car.
