Improving
the trail network in the beautiful Kackar Mountains
Yusufeli
May 11 - May 27, 2012
Volunteer project: The Kackar Mountain is one of the most popular trekking areas in Turkey. In the Hevek valley, below the main range, are footpaths, mule-trails and stone paved paths through forests and between villages. Due to lack of use, winter snow and winds, parts of the trails are now narrow, partly cut off, bushy, steep and untidy. We want to reopen these traditional trails to form a network of daywalks around the villages of Barhal and Yaylalar.
The volunteers will remove stones along the path, reconstruct the broken parts, construct steps, mark the routes. Volunteers will have to walk to the workplaces, but a minibus will take them to a nearby point on the road. The working places are isolated but very beautiful, and a paradise for nature and hike lovers. 6 working hours per day excluding the lunch break which will be spent at the site. The work is physical, and requires much walking on steep mountain paths wich is sometimes very vertiginous. Be prepared for cutting vegetation, moving stones and painting waymarks in a variety of weather on narrow mountain paths.
Arrival and orientation: The project will start in Istanbul with an orientation meeting that all volunteers should attend on the first day of the workcamp (May 11, Friday). The group will depart on May 12, Saturday and travel all across Turkey from West to the Northeast by coach (21 hours). Thus 1 overnight stay in Istanbul is compulsory with an extra cost of 15 Euro on bed & breakfast basis. The rest of the camp days will be spent in Artvin province.
Language: English
Accommodation: In an old village house which is now a pension. Volunteers will sleep in rooms holding 2-4 people. Accommodation place may change as the work moves on. There may be an opportunity to camp out for one or two nights, so if you want to camp, bring a sleeping bag and mat. Food will be provided by the pension owner and his wife. Lunches and water will be carried to the work site in your bags.
