Volunteer work: Since the school is located in an area
where it has limitation in meeting various international people, the
purpose of the program is to foster the idea of global citizenship among
the students through informal English or Japanese conversation classes
and additional learning activities focused on world issues and cultural
difference awareness, tolerance, and acceptance.
There are about 15-20 students in one class, and having skills such as
dancing, singing, acting, and teaching languages (English or Japanese)
will be very helpful. Additionally, volunteers will have the benefit of
experiencing Korean culture, horsemanship, as well as other school
activities or class field trips.
Free time: The students and teachers will be more than happy to give free horsemanship lessons to the volunteers. Visiting famous places in the local area is another great way to spend your free days.

Namwon The
geographical advantages of Namwon have made it a cultural, economic, and
political center since ancient times, and the city has plenty to offer
with its abundance of historical remains stretching from the ancient
kingdoms to the Joseon period. With a total of 94 designated cultural
assets including one National Treasure protected by the national
government, the Namwon area holds about 20% of the designated cultural
assets in the Jeollabuk-do province. This historic city is also steeped
in classic literature.
As the birthplace of the eastern school
of pansori narrative singing, Namwon is the source of the Story of
Chunhyang that tells of the passionate love between Chunhyang and Master
Lee, as well as the Story of Heungbu with its themes of brotherly love,
virtue rewarded, and vice reproved. Set against the natural grandeur of
Korea's "spirit mountain" Jirisna, designated National Park No.1, Namwon
is a year-round tourist destination with its Chunhyang Festival in
spring and Heungbu Festival in autumn.

Organizing
cultural and education programs for children in rural areas
Uiryeong, Gyeongnam
June 19 - August 27, 2012
Uiryeong, Gyeongnam
September 12 - December 5, 2012
Volunteer project: Uiryeong is a small town famous for
its
beautiful scenery and for the delicious traditional Korean rice cakes
called "Bangae-deok". Since the
government usually develops infrastructure depending on the population
of the region, many people in this area are isolated from
those benefits. The project is in support of a children’s center
providing educational opportunities for children and youth in the local
community.
The center has many children who grow up in families with only one
parent or multicultural families. Most of them have very small chance to
meet foreigners. The local host wants to give them an intercultural
experience with the volunteers.
Volunteer work: Together with Korean volunteer(s), the
international participants will organize and manage cultural and
education afterschool programs such as foreign languages (mainly English), outdoor
activities, etc. for children of different ages who attend the local children's
center. The children at the center are mainly elementary school students
and few middle school students. They normally stay at the center after
school, from 2 pm until around 9 pm.
Any kind of activities and ideas are welcome, as long as they provide
the local children with opportunities for cultural exchange. The local
children are very open and interested about the different countries in
the world.
Free time: There is sports complex nearby. You can also visit many traditional sites around this area such as mountains, temple, villages and palaces, and so on.
Profile of the volunteer:
• Previous volunteer experience with children (preferred but not
necessary)

areas).

Support
the educational and cultural exchange programs for children on Wando
Island
Wando, Jeonnam
June 19 - August 27, 2012
Wando, Jeonnam
September 12 - December 5, 2012
Volunteer project: Wando is an island located in the south-west, about 500 km away from Seoul. It is very close to the mainland and is connected with a bridge. And it has the first-class clean sea area in Korea. Wando provides abundant sea foods which is the most delicious and high-quality in the country. Because of the distance, the local people do not get many opportunities to see and meet foreign people. In this respect, the project will play an important role in bringing the local children and people to get a taste of diverse cultures.

Volunteer work: The project supports a local children's
center and is aimed at developing programs for the local children,
especially on English and cultural exchanges. Children who live around
the Center have less opportunities to learn foreign languages and
experience different cultures due to their family situations. Children
in the center vary from age 7 to 12. Children stay in the center from 2
to 9 p.m. Volunteers will organize their own cultural and educational
programs for these children such as art, music, English, mathematics,
hiking, cooking, play and others. Any kind of activities and ideas are
welcome as long as they provide the local children with opportunities
for cultural exchange. The center has small space, but they have many
outdoor activities. The volunteers will join these activities with the
children, and have a chance to get to know real Korean culture.
There are many social service centers run by the local host. You can
visit a local senior center, a free food center and a local self-support
center.
Free time: During the weekends, there are lots of things to do in Jeonnam area, various local festival, beautiful nature and historical places.
Profile of the volunteer:
• Previous volunteer experience with children (preferred but not
necessary)
• Interest about Korea (learning the language and cultures of the local
area).
