Bali Island is a densely populated island, with more than 3 million inhabitants all together. The population is almost entirely Indonesian; 95% are of Balinese Hindu descent and could be described as ethnic Balinese. Bali is also a tiny, extremely fertile and dramatically mountainous island which measures 140 km by 80 km. The tourism boom, which started in 1970s, has brought many changes and has helped pay for improvement in roads, telecommunication, education and health. Though tourism has had some marked effects, Bali’s unique culture and custom has proved remarkably defined.

Heritage site
Kemudo, Klaten regency
September 1 - September 15, 2012
Volunteer project: This project follows the important, global initiative to preserve World Heritage sites since 2006. Arriving from all across the world, the volunteers will discuss issues relating to world heritage and cultural diversity while actively engaging in the preservation of World Heritage sites. The project will be focusing on Bubrah Temple as part of the Prambanan Temple compound. Guided visits to Prambanan will be organized in cooperation with the site’s management. The Heritage Centre renders a symbolic dimension to heritage through debates and reflections, contributes to the restoration and preservation of cultural heritage, and improves accessibility and availability of information. The Centre also raises the awareness of the local population, by creating a sense of ownership and identification. It also promotes cultural heritage between international volunteers and organizations.
The volunteers will work on restoration projects in the Prambanan temples under the supervision and guidance of the Archaeological Department. Before the restoration work begins, the volunteers will have a one day orientation. This is a truly educational process, which will enrich the volunteers with cultural understanding.
Since the volunteers will be living in the local community of Kemudo village, they will also engage in activities at the local school with the local students. Volunteers will help promote preservation of the temples and do some activities like student competitions, culture exchange, etc. The volunteers will also campaign about world heritage preservation and preservation of Prambanan Temple in particular among the local community and visitors to the world heritage site.
