Monitoring the state of the coastal fauna and recovering old rural paths at Creus Cape

                    Selva de Mar, Girona          June 29 - July 12, 2007

Volunteer project: This project will take place at the Natural Park of Cap de Creus (Creus Cape). One of the most interesting aspects of the cape is its geological formation, which is easily visible as the majority of the cape consists of bare rocks. There are a large number of prehistoric dolmens (the one at la Creu d'en Corbatella, at Roses, is particular well-known). Submerged in the sea, there is also valuable archaeological legacy of ship wrecks from the period of the Roman Empire.

In cooperation with the Natural Park of Cap de Creus, the volunteer work consists of monitoring the state of the coastal fauna, as well as recovering of old rural paths in the area. At the same time, other tasks will be developed such as:
- Picking up rubbish from several beaches in the area and trekking paths.
- Spreading awareness among the beach users of environment respect
- Marking the routes of prehistoric heritage (dolmen) in the area.

Free time activities: There will be organized trips around the Natural Park of the Cape Creus (including sleeping in bivouac). Soirees, group activities and games to promote cooperation and solidarity will also be part of the scheduled activities. Furthermore there will be a visit to the beautiful fishermen's village of Cadaquès.

Accommodation: In tents on the camp site in the olive grove of Selva de Mar.

Location: Selva de Mar (Alt Empordà), Girona, Costa Brava. The village Selva de Mar is a special jewel in Costa Brava, only about 2 km from Port de la Selva. Off of the peak season, particularly in the week, it may happen, that one is in fact still the only tourist here. Despite the boom of the tourism, Selva de Mar conserved more or less its identity. During the main season and at the weekends however, a grand number of holiday visitors live here. A lot of them are of village origin and have renovated the houses of the village respectfully.
If you feel a romantic vein in yourself, you should not neglect the opportunity to explore the corners of Selva de Mar.

Restoration of a heritage path using traditional dry-stone techniques
                       Fatarella, Terres Ebre          July 1 - July 15, 2007

Volunteer project: The “Costa de Mirafont” is a dry-stone path the begins at the chapel of la Mare de Déu del Carme and continues up in the mountains. The path has been heavily damaged by several agents. This is the first international volunteer workcamp which is organized at the mountains of Terra Alta and hopefully the project will contribute to open the eyes of the youngsters and the community as a whole towards new ways of doing things, cohabitation and learning.

The theme of the project is to refurbish the dry-stone path in accordance with the traditional techniques. The idea is to restore its original aspect and at the same time to conserve its basic function, that is to pass satisfactorily the rain water. Moreover, the purpose of the project is to create awareness of the restoration of this historical heritage and promote its importance. Another purpose is to establish relations between the Catalan youth of la Fatarella, the local population in general and the volunteers.

Free time activities: Swimming pool and soccer, debates and workshops arranged by local associations. There will be also an organized trip to the beaches of Delta de l’Ebre.

Accommodation: In the local school of la Fatarella. There will be mattresses but the volunteers will have to bring a sleeping bag. Showers at the public swimming pool.

Location: La Fatarella is a village situated in the north-east of the region Terra Alta at the mountain range with the same name. It has a population of approx. 1300 inhabitants.

Improving the youth facilities in a suburban area of Barcelona
                       Badia del Valles, Barcelona          July 7 - July 22, 2007

Volunteer project: The project is a follow-up of the workcamps done between 2001 and 2006. The project is a joint initiative of the City Council of Badia del Vallès and the organisation Recursos d’Animació Intercultural (RAI). The initiative aims at improving the youth facilities in an isolated suburban area of Barcelona by creating a project of collaboration between the local youth and foreign youngsters.

The work will consist of:
- Painting of the Casal de Joves (youth centre).
- Restoring paintings at the Casal.
- Some gardening tasks.
- Arranging the yard in collaboration with young local artists.
- Exporting the different art projects (wall paintings, mosaics, sculptures) designed by young local artists to buildings around the town.
- And other creative tasks....

The international volunteer project will be linked to an open young artist festival that will populate the youth centre with their creations. The project will take place while the Night Summer program for youngsters in Badia runs. It consists of concerts, parties, cinema, workshops and activities organized by the youngsters, the Local Youth Council and their associations. We are talking about a project that is absolutely integrated in the youth life of the municipality! The workcamp will include activities on intercultural learning and visits to immigration and anti-racist associations in Barcelona.

Accommodation: At the Youth Club. There will be separated bedrooms for boys and girls, showers and kitchen.

International Meeting on Youth and Rural life
        Oden, Lleida          July 12 - July 31, 2007

Volunteer project: The project will be to prepare an International Meeting about the youth at rural areas. The idea was born as a result of experiences learnt at different international projects and the inexistence of a rural international meeting for youth. The main topic at the meeting is the youth population living in rural villages either permanently or as weekend residence known as “neo-rural”. During the International Meeting (taking place the last weekend of the project), entities working with youth will introduce their aims and objectives, the videos made by the international volunteers of this project will be presented and outdoor activities will be organized.

The activities consist of preparing the material, doing the setting and logistics in order to prepare the International Meeting on Youth and Rural life that is to be held the last weekend of the project. Moreover, the volunteers will realize tasks concerning awareness towards rurality and youth.

Free time activities: Group dynamics and visits to several places such as Busa, Solsona’s market, Cambrils and many others. Finish with great event of the Seminar and massive camping.

Accommodation: In a country house at the Municipality of Olius located 7 km from Solsona.

Help in the organization and running of the 20th Music Festival of Cantonigros
                       Santa Maria de Corco, Barcelona          July 13 - July 25, 2007

Volunteer project: The music Festival of Cantonigròs is a great event, which attracts during the month of July around two thousand people, both audience and participants. Musicians from 30 different countries come and perform at the festival, so it is a great intercultural experience! The performers, the local people of the area and the volunteers of the workcamp participate side by side in the Festival.

The volunteer activities at the project consist in collaborating with the organization and development of the 20th Music Festival of Cantonigròs. More precisely, the volunteers have to build and dismantle the installations to carry out the Festival. During the Festival, the volunteers will have to help with "other services" such as catering, entrance control, etc.

Language: English

Free time activities: Excursions to discover the region and its cultural, natural and social way of life. Also, exchange of activities, funny workshops and taking profit of the atmosphere of the Festival.

Accommodation: Participants will be accommodated in tents next to the music area.

Location: Santa Maria de Corco (Barcelonés). It is a large municipality located on the East side of Osona's region, and dates from the XVth century. Originally, it was known as L´Esquirol (squirrel in Catalan) because of the first settlers who lived in a rural house with a squirrel. Later on, the new name was given by the moving of Santa Maria de Corco Church. It comprehends the terms of Cantonigròs, Sant Julià de Cabrera and Sant Martí de Sescorts. Cantonigròs hosts an important incoming tourism and the annual festival.

Environmental conservation work in the delta of the Llobregat river

                       Delta del Llobregat, Barcelona          July 16 - July 29, 2007

Volunteer project: This is the second year working on this project. We will collaborate with the Cooperative of Natural Delta Environment in order to monitor the state of fauna and flora, as well as arrange new rural paths in the area. The project will also promote the knowledge of the social and environmental aspects of the Llobregat’s Delta. It will also be possible to do bird watching.

The tasks of the volunteer group will be:
- Path maintenance and establishing of several new routes along the river Llobregat.
- Environmental research about aquatic ecosystems in several sections of the river Llobregat.
- Participating in the maintenance and conservation of several natural areas, such as the Remolar Area and Litoral Forest.
- Raising awareness among local youngsters, so they can get familiar with the surrounding area.

Special requirements: You should be able to ride a bike.

Archeological research at an ancient Roman village
        Cambrils, Tarragona          July 16 - July 30, 2007

Volunteer project: The archaeological site of La Llosa originates from century I BC to VI AD and hides an ancient Roman village that deposits of a factory of salting meat and fish, a tiny necropolis, residences and a bakery. The history of the archaeological site begins in 1980 when urbanizing the area, ancient rests were found. Since 1999 Fundació Pere Tarrés has organized international volunteer projects at the site in collaboration with the municipality of Cambrils.

The project consists of archaeological research of the ancient Roman village at La Llosa. The work will consist of: cleaning, codifying and making an overview of the new discoveries during the excavation tasks. There will also be need for plan metric and topographical support. The volunteers will be distributed in 4 groups of 5 persons who will follow a rotary system in order to get to know the different steps of an archaeological process.

Free time activities: Group dynamics, astronomic workshop at the beach, discovery of the Roman Tarraco, excursions to Poblet and a weekend trip to Barcelona, History museum of Cambrils, games at the beach, meeting with local associations, etc.

Accommodation: At the local school Joan Ardèvol in Cambrils. Some classrooms will be turned into dorms. The school offers all kind of facilities.

Help transform a medieval monastery into a youth meeting place
                       El Morell, Tarragona         July 18 - August 1, 2007

Volunteer project: This project will take place in Granja dels Frares ("Friar's Farm). This building was made to lodge the workers of the "Santes Creus" monastery during medieval ages. The municipality wants to regain this building and to convert it into a youth meeting place.

Volunteers will clean the surroundings of the farm and will renovate the archaeological site. Another task is to put sign posts along the routes that lead to the farm, in order to help people to access the place easily. It would also be necessary to sign post trekking itineraries that has the farm as a staring point.

Free time activities: Discovering the surroundings: El Morell, Santes Creus Monastery and Francolí River. There will be organized trips to Tarragona and Barcelona.

Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated at a camping site. They will help installing and dismantling the tents before and after the camp.

Preserving the native turtles of Valles Oriental
       Cardedeu, Valles Oriental          July 29 - August 12, 2007

Volunteer project: Casal de Joves de Cardedeu (CJC) is a local youth association situated between the region of Oriental Vallès and Monsteny, a very famous Catalonian mountainous area rich in environmental sites, rural landscapes and small towns. Cardedeu is a town with youngsters actively involved in the association life of the local community.

Volunteers will help the youth association, Casal de Joves de Cardedeu, to renovate its work site and to organize better their daily activities and tasks. The group will also take part in an environmental project with turtles (Projecte Rius). The tasks will be to mark the turtles native of the area and to extract the exotic turtles that have been invading the stream Vallforners.

Free time activities: Cultural visits to Barcelona and Girona. Also beach and National Park of Montseny.

Accommodation: In the local school “Les Aigües”.

Renovation and archaeological activities in the ancient Iscle Castle
                       Vidreres, Girona          July 29 - August 12, 2007

Volunteer project: The Iscle Castle is situated in Vidreres, a town from the XII century. The castle is a historical patrimony of big importance in Catalonia that has been degraded and abandoned. The municipality nowadays intends to recover the castle in order to re-establish its value as it has played a great historical role in the past. The project aims to establish intercultural relations among international volunteers and locals from Vidreres by doing several cultural events.

The international team of volunteers will work on the renovation of the damaged areas of the Castle. The tasks will be: cleaning the surroundings of the castle, and leading and informing visitors of the ecological and natural values of this area that is full of different types of archaeological material.

Free time activities: Typical dinner, events and traditional performances as “Festa Major” (popular party). Moreover, competitions, soccer match, poetry night, summer events with pleasant surprises...

Accommodation: The Salvador Espriu School. All services provided.

Location: Vidreres, La Selva (Girona), near the Costa Brava. Its limits go this way: In the North it borders with Caldes de Malavella, on the East side with Tossa de Mar, with Lloret de Mar in the south and the west are Maçanet de la Selva and Sils. Vidreres, because of its proximity to Lloret de Mar, has become a very touristic town.

Archaeological research at a Civil War military camp
       Pujalt, Barcelona          July 29 - August 12, 2007

Volunteer project: The republican side of the Civil War settled a military camp at Pujalt in 1938-39. The volunteer project consists of realizing an archaeological work in order to recover the equipments of the military training camp of the republican popular army.

Volunteers will help in archaeological research at the military camp. Furthermore, the project will have an awareness part, consisting of the recovery of a part of the history that is often forgotten. Apart from the technical work, an educative project will be realized.

Language: English

Free time activities: Workshops of circus and juggling, video forum and debate with a former combatant. Moreover, there will be possibility to use the swimming pool and do adventure sports: rappelling and climbing. Games and excursions will also be planned.

Accommodation: Wooden shelter with capacity for 30 people. Access to toilets and showers at the swimming pool of the municipality. Outdoor kitchen facilities. Other facilities: Soccer field, swimming pool and sports centre.

Restoration and improvement of the village of Envall
        Envall, Lleida          August 6 - August 19, 2007

Volunteer project: The village of Envall is a nice mountainous settlement in the heart of the Pyrenees that was abandoned for more than 30 years and first inhabited again in 2002. Because of the desertion, its streets, paths and most of the old houses are in bad state. The hosting association is a group of young people trying to give alternative to the devastating model of abandoning, destroying and creating massive tourist complexes in the natural environments.

The aim of the volunteer activities will be the restoration and improvement of the main street equipments and perimeter of the village and refurbishing the church of the village. We will use clearing techniques, reconstruction of the dry-stone wall, etc. At the same time, we will manage the kitchen garden and the country house.

Free time activities: Group dynamics, night meetings, some workshops of traditional crafts and astronomy, hiking to the Moncortés lake, to the Aigüestortes National Park, the bunkers of the Spanish civil war in Aramunt, the Erinyà gorge...

Restoration and environmental awareness activities in fire devastated areas of Central Catalonia
                       Pinos, Lleida          August 12 - August 31, 2007

Volunteer project: After the devastating fire in Central Catalonia and Solsonès in 1998, a great damage was caused. This educational environmental project was born in order to restore the area affected by the fire.

Volunteers' tasks are:
• To do prevention of heritage and environmental backgrounds.
• To do investigation of the direct and indirect causes and effects of the fire on the environment and its habitants.
• To do research of the actual and future perspectives of the rural dimension.
• To do different kind of restoration works at the devastated areas.

Free time activities: Village festivals, cycling, walking, rappelling. We will play traditional games, and make different trips e.g. to Barcelona, the outdoor market, etc.

Accommodation: Country house in the municipality of Orius situated 7 km from Solsona.

Restoration of The Three Hills historic site in Barcelona
        Barcelona          August 16 - August 30, 2007

Volunteer project: In the 1930s, Barcelona was one of the sceneries of the Spanish Civil War. The fact that the city was under attack turned it into a city with anti-aircraft batteries and anti-aircraft bunkers. Most of these batteries and shelters are now buried underneath buildings and have been forgotten. Fundació Escoltes Josep Carol is one among other associations that are doing an effort to find and rehabilitate the bunkers in order to recover the historical memory of the city. One of these bunkers is placed in the “Parc dels Tres Turons” (The Park of the Three Hills), a strategic elevated location from where you can get a good view over the city.

The volunteers will be involved in cleaning and renovating the area with the aim that in few years time the installation of a museum can begin. The museum is going to tell the story of the Spanish civil war with the bunkers at The Three Hills as point of departure.

Free time activities: Activities related to the history and the historical memories of the civil war: visits at museums, film projections and visiting important sites of Barcelona linked to its recent history, etc.
