Volunteer opportunities in SPAIN

Monitoring the state of the coastal fauna and recovering old rural paths at Creus Cape
Selva de Mar, Girona          July 4 - July 17, 2006

Volunteer project: This project will take place at the Natural Park of Cap de Creus (Creus Cape). One of the most interesting aspects of the cape is its geological formation, which is easily visible as the majority of the cape consists of bare rock. Phenomenon such as metamorphism, folding and fracturing can be seen, giving us an insight into the evolution of the landforms of the early Paleozoic period in this region of Catalunya. The rivers and streams that drain the zone are short and only carry water after occasional heavy rains. At some points, though, rock pools remain. The historical and cultural heritage of the Creus Cape adds to its environmental value. There are a large number of prehistoric dolmens, that of la Creu d'en Corbatella, at Roses, being particularly well-known. Submerged in the waters of the zone is a valuable archeological legacy of shipwrecks from the period of the Roman Empire.

The group of volunteers will cooperate with the Natural Park of Cap de Creus monitoring the state of the coastal fauna, as well as in the recovery of old rural paths in the area. At the same time, other tasks will be developed such as:
- Cleaning and picking up rubbish from several beaches in the area and trekking paths.
- Drawing the trekking paths on a map for publishing.
- Renovation of several fountains.
- Follow-up of the marine fauna.
- Work together with the village population

Language: English

Free time activities: Walking and bivouac around the Natural Park of the Cape Creus, soirees, and group activities and games to promote cooperation and solidarity.

Accommodation: In tents on the camp site in the olive grove of Selva de Mar.

Location: Selva de Mar (Alt Empordà). Girona. Costa Brava. The village Selva de Mar is a special jewel in Costa Brava, only about 2 km from Port de la Selva. Off of the peak season, particularly in the week, it may happen, that one is in fact still the only tourist here. Despite the boom of the tourism, Selva de Mar conserved more or less its identity. During the main season and at the weekends however, a grand number of holiday visitors live here. A lot of them are of village origin and have renovated the houses of the village respectfully.
If you feel a romantic vein in yourself, you should not neglect the opportunity to explore the corners of Selva de Mar.

Help in the organization and running of the XIXth Music Festival of Cantonigròs
Santa Maria de Corco, Barcelonés          July 7 - July 20, 2006

Volunteer project: The music Festival of Cantonigròs is a great event, which attracts during the month of July around two thousand people, both audience and participants. Musicians from 30 different countries come and act at the festival, so it's an intercultural exchange in which the participants in the festival are side by side with the people of the village and also with the participants in the workcamp.

The volunteer activities at the project consist in collaborating with the organization and development of the XIXth Music Festival of Cantonigròs. The participants have to build and dismantle the installations of the Festival and do the "order services" such as catering, entrance control during the event.
Volunteers will work around 5 hours per day. Although the tasks will be well organised, we have to be conscious that when organising a festival like this one, there are some improvised tasks that have to be faced suddenly. In the festival days, the tasks will be organised in different groups who will work in turns during the days. It has to be noticed that the Festival organisation could concentrate the work tasks in specific days. So there will be days that volunteers will work longer hours and other days that they will work less.

Language: English

Free time activities: The free time activities will consist of excursions to discover the region and its cultural, natural and social way of life. Participants will also do an exchange of activities, funny workshops, and enjoying the environment of the Festival, where they will meet different cultures from all over the world, going deeply into the coral music and the typical dances of each country.

Accommodation: Participants will be accommodated in tents beside the musical camps.

The condition of a city under attack turned it into a city with antiaircraft batteries and antiaircraft refugees. One of these constructions is placed in the “Parc dels Tres Turons” (Three Hills Parc), a strategic elevated location from where you can get a good sight of almost all the city.
