Environmental project with the Educational Centre "Il Melograno" in Lattari Mounts natural park
       Vico Equense, Campania          June 10 - June 24, 2006

Volunteer project: Vico Equense is located near Naples, Pompei, Positano and Sorrento, in a nice area, rich of natural and archaeological beauties. Volunteers will work in the Environmental Educational Centre called "Il Melograno", located in the Lattari Mounts, which is a natural park. The work will consist in maintenance and cleaning of some paths just around the centre, connected with the highest mountain of the zone: Faito Mountain. In the area there is still a spring where there are the "pinguicula hirtiflora", the unique carnivore plant of Apennines.

Preparation of a festival and environmental activities in the Venice lagoon
                    Mira, Veneto          June 11 - June 25, 2006

Volunteer project: Mira faces Venice lagoon and hundreds of islands, and from Venice richness and domain and power it preserves its historical villas, ancient churches and palaces with gorgeous frescos. The town develops on Brenta river, along it there is a unique naturalistic oasis, where, during the summer, the “Festival Estate dei Popoli” (Summer of the People) takes place.

Volunteers will be involved in two different activities: environmental maintenance works on tracks in the naturalistic area, and setting up information points and helping the organization of the Festival.

Walk the mountains and discover the old villages of Dora Baltea Canavesa
       Quincinetto, Piemonte          June 12 - June 26, 2006

Volunteer project: The workcamp will take place in the municipality of Quincinetto and will aim at the renovation of ancient footpaths included in the Big Alps Crossing, which gets from Quincinetto to the higher peaks in the mountains. These trails allow the discovery of the environmental and anthropologist particularities of the area called "Dora Baltea Canavesa": fauna and flora, quartz mines, rocky formations...

This volunteer workcamp is included in a bigger campaign: "Walk the mountains... and discover the old villages of the Dora Baltea Canavesa". Volunteers will collaborate in the maintenance and restoration of the wooden signs, "dry stone walls" and stockades and also cutting shrubs in the green area. Moreover they will participate in anthropologic-naturalistic meetings and excursions with experts and will have the opportunity to discover the traditions of the area.

Cleaning up and maintenance of the newest urban park in Milan district
       Cinisello Balsamo, Lombardia          June 16 - July 2, 2006

Volunteer project: The Parco Grugnotorto-Villoresi is a local Park on the territory of Paderno Dugnano, Cusano Milanino, Varedo, Muggiò, Nova Milanese e Cinisello Balsamo, villages situated in the northern hinterland of Milan. The massive urbanization, occurred in this area after Word War II, has mainly changed the features of this territory, today mostly covered by roads, factories and houses, on the place of the old and typical country landscape. That's why, at the end of the '80s, some groups and organizations gathered together and asked for the protection of residual agricultural territories against urbanization. This dream has become reality through the setting up of one of the youngest parks in Milan district, Parco Grugnotorto-Villoresi, founded in 1999. This is now a park in "working progress" that needs volunteers' help to grow-up.

Volunteers will help cleaning the area of the park from rubbish, taking care of the plants recently planted and keeping the green area enjoyable. Besides helping watering the fields during dry days, volunteers will collaborate at the maintenance of some equipment in the park.

Restoration of a former anti-aircraft base, a future environmental center
       Campo Calabro, Calabria          June 17 - July 1, 2006

Volunteer project: The workcamp is located in the "Matiniti Inferiore" ex-munitions storage that, together with other 24 buildings, was used as an anti-aircraft base during the 2nd World War. The fortress is only 2 km far from the sea and is situated just in front of the Messina Strait. The closeness to both sea and mountain creates a unique combination of colours and smells, and a definitely fascinating landscape. In fact you can easily get from the beaches, crossing the hills, to the woods.

The volunteer project aims at restoring and revaluating a part of the building in order to enable it to host environmental didactic activities for local schools. Volunteers will clean up the area and take off the spoilt items (doors, windows, etc.). Due to the summer high temperatures, the group will work very early in the morning.

Senior project - Maintenance of paths and excursion tracks in the mountain park of Apennine
       Pievepelago, Modena          June 22 - July 1, 2006

Volunteer project: The wonderful mountain park of Apennine is the theatre of the Tagliole valley. The area is rich in nature, mountain lakes, excursion paths. The local volunteer group members are expert mountain and ecological guards, patrolling the area and monitoring the flora and fauna. Senior volunteers will be very helpfull for the maintenance of the paths and excursion tracks. The activities to be carried out include cleaning paths, installing road signs and monitoring of the area.

The project is specifically conceived for senior volunteers. This is a traditional group project in a mountain area. Work activities (4-5 hours per day) are balanced on an average senior profile. The project will try to facilitate the arrival of the participants picking them up at the closest station.

Restoration of wooden signs and renovation of ancient footpaths
       Tavagnasco, Piemonte          June 23 - July 7, 2006

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project will take place in the area between three small municipalities: Quincinetto, Tavagnasco and Quassolo in the district of Turin near the border with the region Val d'Aosta and it will aim at the renovation of ancient footpaths included in a bigger campaign: "Walk the mountains... and discover the old villages of the Dora Baltea Canavesa". These trails allow the discovery of the environmental and anthropologist particularities of this area called "Dora Baltea Canavesa": fauna and flora, quartz mines, rocky formations...

Recovering of an estate's field confiscated to the mafia
       Volvera, Piemonte          June 24 -
July 8, 2006

Volunteer project: Casacmos is an educational community which tries to help people become the protagonist of their own future trough sharing, temperance and hosting. Born as an association in the 1999, it has become a hosting structure for youth projects. Different sustainable lifestyles are lived and proposed at the community: energy use, conflict resolution, solidarity hosting (poor people and immigrants from the area), the long life learning... For the first year the community will host an international volunteer workcamp, aimed at recovering of an estate's field, confiscated to the mafia.

The work foresees cleaning of the area, collection of wood, collection of fruits and possibly the production of homemade jam. Moreover, there will be several trainings about the law on the confiscation of properties belonging to mafia criminals, and about the difference between mafia in the North and in the South of Italy. Meetings with the young people from the area will be organised to discuss about the project and for a cultural exchange.

Cleaning the beaches and interviewing tourists in a Natural Marine Reserve
       Punta Campanella, Campania          July 1 - July 13, 2006

Volunteer project: The workcamp will take place in Massa Lubrense, a small village situated on the farthest edge of Sorrento Peninsula. The recent institution of the Natural Marine Reserve aims to keep natural one of the most beautiful and rank coasts of Italy. For this reason was established the Environment and Legality Observatory, with the aim to spread the idea of environmental legality and to help in monitoring and preventing illegal actions on the coast.

In this rich place, the volunteers will be involved in helping the Reserve and Observatory staff in spreading and informing the tourist and all the people about the peculiarity of the Reserve. They will be involved also in cleaning the beaches and in taking interviews from the tourists in order to improve the activities of the Reserve.

Restoration and cleaning up of an antique craggy village
       Cava d'Ispica, Sicily          July 1 - July 15, 2006

Volunteer project:  Cava d’Ispica (Ispica’s quarry), known as the cave town, is one of the oldest and most important ancient craggy towns of the Eastern Sicily. It’s situated in a spectacular 13 km-long canyon, formed by a continuous succession of necropolis and craggy settlements. Volunteers, in collaboration with the Cultural Superintendence, will restore and clean up the ancient village called Pernamazioni.
Accommodation will be particularly austere, in an old colonial house restructured with ecological criteria, now transformed in a mountain hut managed by Klaura co-operative, working in responsible tourism and trekking. The sea is not very far and it is foreseen to have different excursions to the wildest and most uncontaminated places around.

Reforestation project in Veneto region
       San Stino di Livenza, Veneto          July 1 - July 14, 2006

Volunteer project: San Stino di Livenza is a village situated in the Oriental Plain of the Veneto region, about one hour far away from Venezia and Treviso. The municipality offers an interesting historic and cultural patrimony (churches and a castle) but also, from the environmental point of view, a natural patrimony with the Livenza river, the Bandiziole marsh, and Prassacon wood. This wood is included in a project for the reforestation of the area started 10 years ago which main objective is the creation of a wood in the plain, on the place where there was one in the past, to revalorise and restore the environment and develop cultural, tourist and educational activities in the future. Volunteers will be involved in this project and will work in the maintenance and restoration of the wood. The international volunteer group will also be requested to make wooden signs for the visitors.

Maintenance of paths in the ancient Valcamonica valley famous for its rock engravings
       Malegno and Lozio, Lombardia          July 1 - July 15, 2006

Volunteer project: Malegno and Lozio are two small neighbouring villages located in the middle of Valcamonica, an ancient valley of glacial origin famous for its beautiful mountains that surround it and for its rock engravings, included in the UNESCO World Heritage Humanity List. During the first week, volunteers will be engaged to arrange some paths by an ancient Roman bridge in Malegno, the lower part of the valley; during the second week they will work in Lozio, 1000 meters a.s.l.. During the work, volunteers will be followed and assisted by a group of local young people.

Various environmental activities in the Natural Reserve Aniene's Valley in Rome
       Roma, Lazio          July 1 - July 15, 2006
       Roma, Lazio          July 17 - July 31, 2006

Volunteer project: Since seven years international workcamps have been organized in collaboration with "Spazio Autogestito" Association with the aim to renovate and bring out the value of the Natural Reserve Aniene's Valley, located inside Rome. Thanks to the involvement of many international volunteers, the area has been restored, stopping also the fast urban development that usually destroys all the urban natural areas.

This year volunteers will be involved in many different activities like: the maintenance of natural paths, helping the hosting and information centres' staff (River's house and Cervelletta house), creation and placement of wooden informative boards along bicycle tracks, collection and cleaning of rubbish, creation of a support system for the canoe. During the project different cultural activities will be organized such as theatre, open-air cinema, and visits to the Reserve. All these events will be a way to attract local residents and there will be a chance to start an intercultural exchange between volunteers and local people.

Environmental maintenance of alpine rural areas
       Crandola Valsassina, Lombardia          July 2 - July 15, 2006

Volunteer project: The green valley of Valsassina, is located between Grigne massif on the West and Bergamo Pre-Alps on the East. Valsassina is very rich in regard to nature and variety of landscapes, and goes from Como Lake to Pre-Alps cliffs, situated 2.500 meters a.s.l. Due to its position, it has always been considered an ideal place for the trade transit, in spite of its fame for difficult access.

Volunteers will work on the environmental maintenance of the areas nearby Crandola Valsassina, the village that will host and support volunteers in their activities. The works will be done mainly in the surrounding mountainous areas (footpaths, environmental maintenance of alpine rural areas, etc.). Volunteers will walk to the work places along the mountainous footpaths immersed in the alpine nature.

Restoring a footpath and setting signs in a heritage area of Tuscany
       Bacchereto, Tuscany          July 3 - July 17, 2006

Volunteer project: Bacchereto is a village situated in a wonderful area near Carmignano, famous to be Leonardo da Vinci grandmother's hometown. The area is close to the most important artistic cities of Tuscany, like Florence, Siena, Volterra, Montecatini. The surrounding landscape is the typical Tuscany one, rich in woods, hills and olive trees. Interesting archaeological and Renaissance finds are also important attractions for tourists, as well as the typical cooking with wines and olive oil.

The project aim is to restore the path connecting the 2 villages of Bacchereto and Vinci. Volunteers will also set new signs about the typical flora and fauna on the same path and will create picnic areas in the most remarkable locations. Another goal is the revaluation of the natural, cultural and naturalistic heritage.

Maintenance of the ancient path "Capo delle armi" in Cilento and Valle del Diano National Park
       Corleto, Campania           July 3 - July 18, 2006

Volunteer project: Corleto Monforte is a small village situated in the centre of the Cilento and Valle del Diano National Park. It is characterised by a wonderful mountain landscape and a rich tradition coming from the different civilisations that have lived in the area: Lucani, Greeks, Romans... All of them have left many historic and archaeological testimonies. The village, up of a rock that dominates the Fasanella's Valley till Paestum, is situated at 670 metres above sea level and born under the Lucani civilisation in the 5th century BC.

The aim of the international volunteer project is the maintenance and cleaning up of the ancient path "Capo delle armi", that leads to a water-mill from the 1700. Besides, volunteers will remove small dumps from the mountain beech-wood of Corleto.

Support the daily activities of a Youth House and help in the organization of anti-mafia event in Sicily
       Castelvetrano, Sicily          July 6 - July 20, 2006

Volunteer project: Castelvetrano is a glorious village with an important historical past and many archaeological remains like the marvellous area of Selinunte. On the municipality's territory it has been instituted the Natural Reserve of "Foce del Belice", to preserve and safeguard the flora and fauna of this dune area, one of the most beautiful coastline of Sicily.

Volunteers will help in the daily activities of "Comunità Casa dei Giovani" (House of youth), which manages for years several lands that have been confiscated to the mafia and produce olive oil called "Libera Terra" (Free Earth). The specific work will be on the maintenance and creation of footpaths, continuing the work started by past volunteers. Moreover volunteers will help with the organization and will take part in the "48 hours non stop for the development and the legality", a socio-cultural event which commemorates the assassination of a very famous judge involved in the legal proceedings to mafia criminal activities.

Environmental maintenance of footpaths network in the Alps
       Comunità Montana Bisalta, Piemonte          July 7 - July 21, 2006

Volunteer project: Bisalta is a small mountain community situated in Cuneo district and formed by 5 municipalities: Boves, Chiusa di Pesio, Peveragno (Municipalities Valli Colla, Pesio e Josina), Beinette and Pianfei.

The volunteer workcamp aims at the restoration of the footpaths' net of the area, long about 142 km. Volunteers will work in the maintenance of these paths: cutting grass, removal of infesting plants, reconstruction of "dry stone walls", positioning wooden signs... All the techniques used for this maintenance will respect the nature, and will try to keep the environmental sustainability in the area.

Maintenance of a botanical path in Groane Park
       Limbiate, Lombardia          July 9 - July 23, 2006

Volunteer project: The workcamp will take place in Groane Park, an evocative site with pine-tree and oak woods, situated in the village of Limbiate, one of the more populated areas of Milan district. The park has a typical flora due to the unusual acidity of the ground. The village offers the opportunity of visiting the main town of Milan, the city of Monza with the largest park in Europe, and the artistic city of Como. In Limbiate one can see the Crivelli Palace too, which was Napoleone Bonaparte's house.

Volunteers will help out in the maintenance of a botanical path and cleaning the banks of the little Lombra river. It will be possible to go to an open-air swimming pool and to "dancing-evenings" and popular festivals organised by the town in July.

Safeguard of lava-follow, renovation of paths and prevention of fires in the National Park of Vesuvio
       Ottaviano, Campania          July 10 - July 24, 2006

Volunteer project: Ottaviano is a small town located close to the volcano Vesuvio, and located inside the National Park of Vesuvio. Ottaviano is dated back to the year 700, and today it is still possible to visit the wonderful castle placed in the rich nature that characterises the area.

Volunteers involved in the project will have the task to safeguard a lava-flow, interesting for its geological character. Participants will also renovate old paths and safeguard the area from the danger of fires. They will also take census of vines and restore an old structure used to conserve the natural products.

Restoration of typical dry stone wall and pavings of an ancient villa in Puglia
       Otranto, Puglia          July 10 - July 25, 2006

Volunteer project: Otranto, the most eastern site in Italy, is one of the most interesting places in the Puglia region for its artistic and historical testimonies. It also has an important environmental area and has been included in the new Regional Park of Otranto - S.Maria di Leuca Coast. Near Otranto there is a marvellous "Masseria", old villa used as a farm in the ancient times. It was built in the 14th century and rebuilt in 19th century with a complex hydraulic system. Nearby there are an old Tower, a Church and a Monastery (15th century) of Greek-Italian priests.

Volunteers will work in the cleaning up of the old path, removing invasive plants and rebuilding the typical "dry stone wall". Moreover, they will restore the old paving of the farm, mainly taking care of the well-waters.

Family project - Environmental activities with an educational center in Umbria
       Poggiodomo, Perugia          July 10 - July 20, 2006

Volunteer project: This is a project where parents and children can participate together. The idea is to create a sort of temporary community where adults and children can share the idea of voluntary activity for protecting the nature. The schedule of the camp allows the adults to act as volunteers like in any other voluntary workcamp (4-5 hours a day for environmental tasks). In the meanwhile, children "work" as well, in the sense that they take part in the activities helping parents and sharing easy tasks with them. 1 or 2 facilitators, supported by 1 parent on rotation, care about the children during the working activities, providing snacks, proposing games and excursions. In the daily free time and in the day off, group excursion will be suggested by the local hosting community. Parents can join the project in pair or alone with their child/children. Children should be between 5-10 years old in order to create a homogeneous group.

Poggiodomo is a very small village 975 m above the sea level in Umbria central region, the "green heart of Italy". The local hosting organization Legambiente runs in Poggiodomo an environment education centre where schools and groups come for educational schemes, trainings and eco-tourism. The centre is managed by a family with 2 children.

Help make the Taburno caves accessible for the public
       Airola, Campania          July 15 - August 1, 2006

Volunteer project: The aim of the volunteer workcamp project is restoration and maintenance of several caves located inside Taburno-Camposauro Park, in the Caudina Valley. In the past years international volunteers have restored the footpaths network which connects the most interesting caves in the area, often abandoned and with obstructed entrances by invasive plants. The final objective of the project is to register all the caves of the Park and make trekking paths between them so that they can be visited by local people and tourists.

For the first week of the camp, volunteers will restore the footpaths of the Taburno caves and in the second week they will create a new path next to Isclero river.

Trails maintenance in Adamello Park
       Bienno and Campolungo, Lombardia          July 15 - July 29, 2006

Volunteer project: Bienno, one of most beautiful Italian villages, was built up in the medieval age and is located in Valcamonica, a valley in the northern part of Brescia district, on the slopes of the Alps at 500 m above sea level. This village is well known for the old tradition of iron manufacture and also for the characteristic historic center called "borgo". Campolungo is approximately 1 hour and a half from the outskirts of Bienno and it's very interesting from environmental point of view and contains visible traces of the Roman copper and iron manufacturing industry.

In the first part of the project, volunteers will be hosted in a mountain refuge, at 1.500 metres a.s.l. inside Adamello Park, a protected area 51.000 hectares large. The work will include maintenance of footpaths. In the second part of the camp they will be hosted by local families in the village, doing similar activities. Near to the refuge there is a freshwater stream where it is possible for the more courageous to take a bath!

Adamello Park     The Parco dell'Adamello lies in the heart of the alpine range, the Rhaetian Alps, and includes all the Lombardia side of the Adamello's group, in the northeastern part of the province of Brescia. It extends for 51.000 hectares, from the Tonale Pass to that of Crocedomini; to east, its territory ends where Lombardia Region borders Trentino Region; westwards, its boundary is formed by the upper left side of the Oglio, the fifth longest Italian river. The Parco dell'Adamello is located on the left riverside of the Vallecamonica. The importance of the Parco dell'Adamello has increased due to its position, it acts as a bridge between the two parks with which it borders: to the east the Adamello Brenta Park (Trento region), to the north the Stelvio Park (which confines with the Engadina Swiss National Park). This way, a protected area of 250.000 hectares was formed in the heart of Europe, the biggest in the Alps and one of the most fascinating.
The Adamello Group is the place of the largest glacier in Italy (a surface of about 18 km2). From the central glaciers of the culminating plateau start mountainous crests and chains which, in their turn, are integrated in the subgroups of the Baitone, Frisozzo and Blumone. Peaks, crests, mountains dominate the complex of numerous valleys spread all over the Park, so as to divide the several chains.

 

 

Environmental works in the pine woods of Abruzzo Apennines mountains

Volunteer project: Navelli is a beautiful village situated on a hill up to the Valley of Campo Imperatore, in the Abruzzo Apennines mountains, in the centre of Italy. For many years it has been an important commercial and productive centre, mainly for the saffron, its most famous and prestigious product, used since 3500 years ago as a medicine and as spice in the kitchen. From this little violet flower, Navelli has prospered till today and the refined architecture of its historic centre is a testimony of its richness.

Volunteers will work on the maintenance of some paths around the area and in the cleaning of pine woods where an important local festival will take place during the project.

Restoration of trails and green areas in Valletta Park

Volunteer project: Valletta Park is an agricultural and wooded area, situated on the way from Bergamo to Como. It is extremely important because of its location next to the area called "Brianza Lecchese", that is heavily populated. Its name originated from the folk tradition, due to the canal in the north-west side, and due to the characteristics of depressed area comparing to the surrounding valleys. All the area is covered by a 16 kilometers long cycle-pedestrian route, which allows visitors to appreciate the interesting peculiarities of nature and landscape that make the valley a protected area.

Volunteers will work in the restoration and maintenance of pathways and some green areas into the Park, in collaboration with volunteers from a local organization, "Amici della Valletta", active in this territory for many years.

Maintenance and restoration of nature protected and archaeological areas in the regional park "Monti Picentini"
       Giffoni Valle Piana, Campania          July 16 - July 30, 2006

Volunteer project: Giffoni is a pleasant village located in the regional park "Monti Picentini", only 20 km from Salerno and 25 km from Paestum. The park is covered with woods and there are some areas from which was extracted a particular material used in medicine.

Local volunteer group works to restore, safeguard and revaluate the area. The workcamp participants will collaborate with them in the maintenance and restoration of the protected area "Casa Natura" and in the cleaning up of Carborana Sanctuary reserve. They will also spend some working time in the maintenance of the Secco river (dry river) and the famous archaeological area of Paestum, 30 km far away, mainly cleaning up its pine woods by the seaside.

During the project, Giffoni will host the famous "Giffoni Film Festival" and volunteers will have the opportunity to assist in their free time. Some visits to naturalistic and archaeological sites are also planned.

Paths restoration in the Orobie Alps
       Alpe Dosso, Lombardia          July 16 - July 29, 2006

Volunteer project: The mountains called Orobie represent the first alpine chain on the north of Lombardia region, and are considerated an important naturalistic patrimony of the area. There are many signs showing the importance of these mountains in the past because of trade traffic and agricultural activities. The southern side has got valleys with numerous ramifications, while the northern side is steeper and it develops in deep valleys, in the direction of Adda river.

Volunteers will be hosted for the first two days at the village Delebio, the last one before the Orobie mountains. Afterwards, they will reach by walking (about 2 hours) the mountain refuge Alpe Dosso, situated at 1.500 a.s.l., where they will stay and work for the rest of the project. Volunteers will make interventions along the footpaths of the park, besides the cleaning and the maintenance of pasture lands, and the mountain refuge itself. Due to the nature of the workcamp taking place in the mountains, volunteers must to be ready for some trekking.

Developing the trails network in the Lombard moorland

Volunteer project: The local park "Rile Tenore Olona" is characterized by the typical vegetation of Lombard moorland, in the north of the region. This area of 14 sq.km is crossed by many watercourses with Olona river being the main one. History, tradition and culture complete the rich description of the territory in which it is located. The historical and naturalistic routes are the best outlet of an area with important architectural presence from the medieval age to the renaissance. The relationship between history and nature is the main attraction of the area and is becoming a tool for the revaluation. Volunteers will work mainly on the maintenance and the development of the Park's paths network.

Improving paths, conducting an ant census and participation in a local festival in Lombardia
       Colere, Lombardia          July 17 - July 31, 2006

Volunteer project: Colere is a small village situated on the slope of Presolana mountain, next to the Valley "Val di Scalve", an evocative atmosphere of unique beauty. It's a typical place for practicing winter sports and for having relaxed summer holidays. Its morphologic particularities make this locality one of the most interesting centers of the "Orobic alpine chain". It has had mines of iron, lead and zinc since the roman age, which represented a fundamental economic resource for the area.

The volunteers' work will consist of maintenance and cleaning up of public areas and footpaths in the park "Orobie Bergamaschi", where Colere is located. An expert naturalist will coordinate and guide the volunteers in conducting a census of the rufa ants living in this area, which are very important for the ecosystem of the forest. During the project, a two-day local festival will take place. The festival involves people from the surroundings and the international group of volunteers will take part in it as well.

This workcamp takes place in a wonderful landscape and the activities are very interesting, but due to the special characteristics of the project (working timetable flexible and various tasks), volunteers are requested to be very motivated and adaptable.

Volunteer project: Dalmine is 6 miles far away from Bergamo, the main town of the district, and 20 miles from Milan. This village was created around 12 centuries ago. There are many churches with very important sculptures and paintings from a historical and artistic point of view and there are still many ancient buildings. There are also two museums dedicated to the Italian renaissance.

The "Parco del Brembo" is a park quite large in the area and well equipped. Volunteers will work in this green area cleaning up and doing ordinary activities like: cutting grass, building up benches and tables. The footpath along the river Brembo will be cleaned. Signposts and fences will be placed.

Boltiere was Bergamo's historical gate and the city center was built up on the main road that during Middle ages was used to get to Bergamo itself.

Maintenance of green areas in traditional villages around Bergamo

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project will take place in three different small villages, all situated inside the park: Madone, Filago and Osio Sotto. Madone and Filago are little villages 5 miles away from Bergamo, that is the main town of the district and it is easily accessible by bus. They are characterized by having a city centre of rural houses made of stones taken from the near river Brembo. In Bonate Sotto can be seen the S. Giulia's church, along with important historic heritage dated around 1130. Local inhabitants still practice a very traditional sport similar to tennis called "Palla Tamburello": for each team there are 5 people.

Volunteers will work 3 or 4 days in each locality cleaning up and carrying out activities like: cutting grass, building up benches and tables. The footpath along the river Brembo will be cleaned. Signposts and fences will be placed.

Footpaths restoration in San Venanzio Gorges
       Raiano, Abruzzo          July 17 - July 30, 2006

Volunteer project: Raiano is situated at Peligna's Valley, on the sheep track from Celano (in Abruzzo) to Foggia (in Puglia region), a very important transhumance way. This position has influenced Raiano since its origin, transforming it into an active centre. There are also some Medieval churches testifying of its peculiar artistic liveliness. The village is known since XV century. It has a nice, wild, uncontaminated and attractive appearance. In the XVI century it was destroyed and rebuilt in the valley, but there are still some ruins on the hills around.

In Raiano's area there are several protected areas: the Natural Reserve of Gole di San Venanzio (San Venanzio Gorges). It is fascinating with its beautiful landscapes and its rare examples of flora and fauna. The hermitage of San Venanzio is situated in this solitude, between Mentino and Urano mountains, near to Aterno river. The volunteer project aims at restoring some paths that cross different interesting areas, abandoned in the last years. Volunteers' tasks will include cleaning the green areas and realising wood furnishing.

Creation of amphibious census, paths maintenance and participation in a village festival in Orobie Bergamaschi nature park
       Gorno, Lombardia          July 17 - July 31, 2006

Volunteer project: Gorno is a typical mountain village of 1800 inhabitants, situated at 750 meters a.s.l., and 30 km far from Bergamo, the main city of the district. This center was very important in the industry history due to its lead and zinc mines, activity that ended in the '700. Moreover, Gorno is situated in an enviable natural setting and offers the possibility for exciting trekking.

The volunteer work will consist in maintenance and cleaning up of public areas and footpaths of the park "Orobie Bergamaschi", where Gorno is situated. An expert naturalist will coordinate and guide the volunteers in the creation of a census of variety of amphibious that live in the area. During the project, a two-days local festival will take place, which will involve the people from the surroundings and the group of international volunteers will take part in this event as well.

Creating a garden for the residents of a mental centre near Genoa
       Genova-Murta, Liguria          July 18 - July 31, 2006

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project will take place in Murta , a small town few minutes away from Genoa centre. The workcamp will be held inside the only public mental centre of Liguria. Here are regularly hosted about 15 patients besides other 20 people who make daily use of the centre services. The centre has at its disposal a quite big portion of land (originally park of a 19th century manor-house). Among the people who daily frequent the centre, there are enough resources to hold a small horticultural activity on the area already tilled.

Volunteers will be involved in maintenance and cleaning up of the rest of the park in order to regain some uncultivated areas. A small part of the park will be used as a garden for the centre guests and furnished with benches and tables.

Restoration of a picnic area in Cilento Park

Volunteer project: Roscigno is a small village situated inside the Cilento Park, which still conserves many archaeological sites, testimony of ancient presence. Its origin is dated back to the V century B.C. Since several years it has hosted international voluntary workcamps directed to the creation of a footpath called "Sulla via dei Lucani" (on the Lucan's way) which crosses the park. The main objective of this path is the valorization of the historical, environmental and archaeological resources and the promotion of the typical products and traditions of this area.

The group of volunteers will work on the restoration of a picnic area situated along the path when it crosses the village Sant'Elia, where it is still possible to see the ruins of a small chapel dedicated to the patron saint.

Archaeological excavations and restoration of an ancient sacred place in Pescara
       Abbateggio, Abruzzo          July 20 -

Volunteer project: Abbateggio is a small rural village situated in the National Park of Majella, a splendid protected area very important from naturalistic point of view. It's placed in the centre of Italy, about 2 hours far from Rome. The volunteers' work will take place in the Sant'Agata fountain, ancient sacred place where the local women went to pray for having milk for their new-born children. The area was very frequented by the neighbouring communities and it seems there was a particular ritual women made during the pilgrimages.

Volunteers will clean up the area and the access path, and will take part in some archaeological excavations together with the specialists from the "Museum of Abruzzo population" of Pescara. They will have the opportunity to discover the traditions of this beautiful area.
