Restoration of a lime kiln
Volunteer project: Dommartin (2405 inhabitants) is a friendly village.
The lime kiln is a recent discover, due to the chance of an excursion.
The municipality got information from a neighbouring town having
restored a lime kiln thanks to an international workcamp. It decided to
follow this example. This workcamp is signifcant for the town which
already made a workcamp which helped in the clearing of the ground, and
enhanced the construction. An earthwork company have to remove the
deposit of rubbish which have been accumulated during the years, in
order to facilitate the work of the volunteers.
Guided by a person who already worked with a group of volunteers on the
restoration of two lime kilns in this region, you will clean parts of it
in order to highlight those parts which have to be restored. This will
include cutting stones, replacing missing stones, fixing of the roof,
redoing the plasterjoints.
Camp language: French and English
Possible free time activities:
- Visit of Dommartin and its beautiful region. Visit of Lyon (many
museums and sites) and of Villefranche.
- Discover of the Monts du Lyonnais aboard the tourist train (le Furet).
- Discovers and walks in the Azergue valley, the Monts du Beaujolais or
the Dombes.
- Sports activities: football, hikes, tennis, swimming pool...
- Meeting with other workcamps.
Accommodation: Lodging in the changing rooms of the football grounds
of Maligny.
Location: At 20 km north-west of Lyon, Dommartin is located at
the foot of slopes of the Lyonnais and Beaujolais (des pierres dorees /
golden stones). It is the garden of Lyon, the countryside of the town
people. It is a region rich of historical and religious past, of varied
agriculture, of artisanal and technical know-how. It is a country to be
discovered on foot, horse-riding, by bycicle...

Creation
of a garden in Maison St Euverte
Volunteer project: Volunteers will participate in the creation of a
garden in Maison St Euverte, a community that houses homeless women and
their newborn babies. Work will include clearing out the weeds and
branches, digging and opening a footpath to allow the women to walk
around the garden with strollers, setting up a tool shed in one of the
corners, planting the new flowerbeds.
Special requirements: Preference will be given to volunteers who
speak some French.
Accommodation: In a building.
Location: In the town of Orleans, 80 km south of Paris.

Renovation of a former windmill / Organizing a local feast
French speaking project
Volunteer project: The international volunteers will carry out variety of
activities in this workcamp: renovation of a former windmill and
clearing of the surroundings; help with the organization of a local
feast (with a topic "the local cheese "fourme"). NB: technical work on
scaffoldings, lodging on the workcamp site, 2 km from the town.
Commitment in the project is necessary.
Camp language: French
Accommodation: In the former windmill, with one water source.
Showers at the football grounds at 1 km.
Location: 72 km south-east of Clermont-Ferrand.

CHAUSSENAC
Auvergne

Laying
out a picnic area near the windmill in Chaussenac
Volunteer project: In 2001 and 2002 the volunteers worked on the
renovation of an old mill in Ostenac. The final project was to transform
this site into an exhibition place showing the traditional heritage in
this region. Last year, the volunteers repaired a small bridge along a
footpath which is used a lot during the summer.
Volunteers will work on the laying out of a picnic area near the
windmill. The activities planned include: clearing, marking, furnishing
(tables, benches), etc.
Camp language: French and English
Possible free time activities:
- On
the spot: hiking in the villages in the neighborhood, visit of farms,
swimming in the Mauriac lake, biking,
- Further, a street theatre festival in Aurillac.
Accommodation: In the windmill, showers at the football grounds (20 min
walk), village at 25 min walk from the mill.
Location: Located 15 km from the town of Mauriac, Chaussenac is a village
in "pays de Xantrie", on the Dordogne river banks. Chausseanc is still
protected from the excess of the modern life style. Nearest city is
Mauriac (15 km).

Renovation of a monastery
French speaking project
Volunteer project: Participants in the project will help with different
renovation works in a monastery. They will recover the original floor of
the monastery by first removing the current floor tiles, clear the
former arcades and a footpath.

Accommodation: In a communal building.
Location: 53 km north of the town of Aurillac.

Renovation of
the Montfort castle site
Volunteer project: The municipality has hosted workcamps for 10 years.
Volunteers were in charge of the enhancement of the Montfort castle
site, which dates back to the 16th century. The castle is now
transformed into a cultural center, and organizes international
exhibitions of engravings and modern art. The municipality wishes to
extend this site, transforming the castle annexes into a restaurant, so
that to welcome artists permanently.
You will do various renovations/reconstructions of a building near the
castle: lay new coat of plaster, building of walls, painting work in the
school.
Camp language: French and English
Possible free time activities:
- On
the spot: hiking on the "road de l'Amethyste", swimming and fishing in a
small lake, visit to Lafarge bakery museum (1930), shows, visit of
farms, pedagogical park, hiking in the regional reserve, biking circuit,
disco clubs near the camping site, market place,
- Further, visit of Issoire, Clermont Ferrand, Puy de Dome.
Accommodation: Under tents at the municipal camping site. Lodging is 20
min from the work place and the village centre.
Location: Located at the south of Clermont Ferrand, in the Natural
reserve of Livradois Forez, Vernet La Varenne is surrounded by a pine
forest. It's a very convivial village during the summer and draws many
hikers thanks to its beautiful lake, its market places, its coffee shops
and its cultural center. Nearest city is Issoire (20 km).

ROUSSAS Rhone Alpes

Improvements and
landscaping in a botanical garden
Volunteer project: Having heard of the
workcamps taking place in neighbour villages, the board members showed interest
in the contacts and exchanges which are generated during an international
workcamp, and hosted their first team of young volunteers in 2002. Thanks to
this successful first experience, the municipality is pleased to host a new
workcamp this summer to work on the enhancement of a botanical garden and its
terraces.
You will be working with a municipal employee, divided in different
teams. The tasks will be: restoration of terraces (clearing of
vegetation and surplus of ground), which are part of the botanical path,
and clearing of a footpath leading to a traditional washing place.
Camp language: French and English
Possible free time activities:
- Visit of Grignan (night market and castle), Pierrelatte (crocodile farm),
Montélimar, Suze la Rousse, swimming pool in St Paul Trois Chateau, Festival of
Avignon, gorges of river Ardeche,
- Sports: swimming, canoe-kayak, excursions, football or pétanque tournaments with
the local people,
- Visit of the monastery of Aiguebelle and its cellars, cathedrals in St
Restitut,
- Meet other workcamps
during the excursion of discovery of Drome.
Accommodation: Lodging under a large tent.
Location: The village of Roussas is located in southern Drome, in the
county of Grignan, at the edge of the Rhone valley. It is one of the nine
botanical villages of Drome. A beautiful botanical circuit going through the
village allows visitors to discover the plantations of new roses and
Mediterranean plants. The village has also a rich cultural heritage with its
castle and its two chapels. Nearest towns are Montélimar (20 km) and Orange (55 km).
