Saint-Etienne     The warm and welcoming city of Saint-Etienne is the gateway to south-eastern France. The history of the "green city" is built around four poles of excellence that are as many landmarks for men and women eager to build on their know-how. This once mining town and capital of the industrial revolution seems to draw its creativeness from the land itself, thriving on an incredible capacity for adaptation and renovation.
The second urban centre in Rhône Alpes, Saint-Etienne is an important bastion of the region's economic network and a key passage west to the Auvergne region and the Atlantic coast. Equipped with all modern forms of transportation (T.G.V., motorways, airport, heliport…) Saint-Etienne continues to improve and reinforce access to and within the city, without which prospects for further development would be limited.
Formed by the junction of two valleys and the Forez plain, Saint-Etienne's hilly location renders a rolling urban landscape with many viewpoints. This remarkable site also reinforces the identity of each and every neighbourhood that "live" on the seven hills of Saint-Etienne.
Saint-Etienne is a city of art and history. The heritage until recently only known to its inhabitants has now been officially recognised by a label. It is only justice to give due to one of the richest collections of French XIXth century architecture with a statuary envied by many.
Capital of the Forez historical province, Saint-Etienne has been able to maintain an unusually comfortable lifestyle for such a large city because of its exceptional surroundings including the nearby Pilat mountains regional park or the largest inland marina in Europe at Saint Victor sur Loire. The people of Saint-Etienne have preserved this blossoming environment both outside and inside the city, for example via the numerous markets that display their goods in the city's streets and the squares, or the friendliness of the inhabitants characterised by a spirit of solidarity and complicity, or the network of pedestrian streets that offers a variety of circuits to visit. In the heart of the city, the prestigious exteriors of public buildings, townhouses and other monuments are reminders that many great architects such as Léon Lamaizière produced some of their finest work here in Saint-Etienne. The decor does indeed reflect the spirit of this city that prefers hard working talent and discretion to pomp and ceremony.
The Mining Museum and the Museum of Craftsmanship and Industry are the guardians of Saint-Etienne's tradition of know-how and excellence. They preserve collections of inestimable worth that the city has chosen to cherish and display for the public.
